Three Chinese warships that were involved in live-fire drills in the Tasman Sea last week have re-entered Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone and are currently in the vicinity of Tasmania. The Defence Department has confirmed it is working with New Zealand's military to jointly track the three warships which are operating about 300km east of Hobart. The news comes as officials in Canberra faced questions over why it was a Virgin pilot that had been the first to alert authorities about Beijing's live-fire exercises on Friday, which had forced airlines to divert flights. Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) is facing a lawsuit for exhibiting an artist’s Ladies Lounge installation that only allows women to enter the installation. The installation by Kirsha Kaechele refers to a moment in Australian history before women won the right to drink in the nation’s pubs in 1965. Until then, women were either relegated to side rooms, where they were charged exorbitantly, or barred from these kinds of establishments altogether. Intended to point out the hypocrisy, the Mona installation offers an opulent retreat for female guests only with champagne served by male butlers. The exhibition also...

On September 7, 1936, the last known thylacine, often referred to as the Tasmanian tiger, is believed to have died in captivity in Hobart, Tasmania. Since then, the species, long presumed extinct, has taken on a near-mythical status. The thylacine still captures the public’s imagination, having earned its place as a modern symbol of both loss, and also possibilities. The creature’s unmistakable striped appearance has also helped propel it to its current position as a pop cultural icon and a constant reminder of humanity’s more destructive side. Yet what is perhaps the most intriguing about the thylacine is that, for...
