I recall a while back an aurora borealis video (also from Finland) I shared met with a good share of enthusiastic replies. So here is a website with live stream. On Thursday JRR Tolkien's early story The Story of Kullervo will be published for the first time. The dark tale reveals that Tolkien's Middle Earth was inspired not only by England and Wales… but also by Finland. "Hapless Kullervo," Tolkien called him. Kullervo, an orphan boy raised into slavery, a tragic hero who commits incest in the dark forests of Karelia and hurls himself on his own blade.

A friend was telling me about an experience he had in the Phillipines, where CIA agents had quad stack magazines.   I told him that I had heard of them, but only remembered that the were of Scandinavian origin.   A little research revealed that they were for the Soumi K31 submachine gun, made in Finland.  Several other submachineguns were made that use the magazine.   A fair number of Swedish K  (M45) submachine guns can use them.   The Swiss M43/44 is a licensed copy of the Suomi, as is the Swedish/Danish M37/39 Here is an excellent YouTube video describing the magazine...

Archaeologists from the University of Helsinki are carrying out excavations of what they say is a unique Stone Age site at Järvenkylä in Virolahti in the far south-eastern part of the country. The most striking feature of the site is the remains of an exceptionally large dwelling that the scientists describe as a "terraced house", in some ways like those found in many modern suburbs.
