Suomi K31 50 rd 9mm Quad Stack Magazine
Gun Watch ^ | 19 July, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

A friend was telling me about an experience he had in the Phillipines, where CIA agents had quad stack magazines.   I told him that I had heard of them, but only remembered that the were of Scandinavian origin.   A little research revealed that they were for the Soumi K31 submachine gun, made in Finland.  Several other submachineguns were made that use the magazine.   A fair number of Swedish K  (M45) submachine guns can use them.   The Swiss M43/44 is a licensed copy of the Suomi, as is the Swedish/Danish M37/39 Here is an excellent YouTube video describing the magazine and how it works.

The video shows how the engineer found a way to make a quad stack magazine work. I often wondered how it was done. These have a good reputation.

There’s also two quad stack magazines for the AR platform, 60 round and 100 round, made by Surefire.

I have a 60 round Surefire for 223/556. Seems to work pretty well.

We were looking at a Surefire 60 rounder when the topic of quad stack magazines came up. I am not sure if they use the same system. The Suomi uses tapered dual springs, two followers, and has a stop for one follower to prevent it from interfering with the other follower. I would like to see a similar video on the Surefire magazine.

I have read that semi-auto copies of the Suomi, with 16 inch barrels, were sold in the U.S. for a while in 2009.

Thought so. I was busy after the 1994 AWB/Magazine limit Law expired in 2004. Very busy. I have all I need.

Interesting magazines but the Suomi 71 round drums are more reliable and easier to load.

The CIA and their Scandinavian sub-machine guns, that relationship sure goes back a long way.

But knowing that his bodyguards have access to them to protect his invaluable life makes the magazine totally acceptable.

You are correct. And a loading tool is another accessory to break or lose.
