New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) announced Wednesday she will be asking National Guard members and state employees to become certified to fill in as substitute teachers as teacher staffing shortages continue to skyrocket. Along with “encouraging” National Guard members and state employees to become licensed substitute teachers, the governor’s “Supporting Teachers and Families” (STAF) initiative will allow state workers to use administrative leave to temporarily fill the vacancies.

RALEIGH, N.C. – A North Carolina substitute teacher has resigned after a student told his father that the teacher told his class that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was not assassinated but instead killed himself. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports Billy Byrd also says his son told him the unidentified substitute music teacher told the class of minority students they were headed to prison because of their clothing. He said the teacher told the students they weren't real Christians if they didn't support President Donald Trump.

BOSTON -- A Lawrence substitute teacher was suspended Wednesday after grabbing a first-grader by his shirt and pulling him down a hallway on Tuesday, police said. Douglas Tracia, 48, was charged with assault and battery because there were scratches and lacerations on the boy's neck, police said. CANANDAIGUA NY — A substitute teacher at Canandaigua Academy was arrested earlier this week after he allegedly tried to buy marijuana from an Academy student. Todd B. Christensen, 34, of Penn Yan, was charged Tuesday by Canandaigua City Police with unlawful possession of marijuana and endangering the welfare of a child.
