Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko told the U.K. Daily Mail in an article published Wednesday that Ukrainian “intelligence services” were killing Ukrainians suspected of collaborating with the Russian military “like pigs” in areas where Kyiv has pushed back the ongoing invasion. The British newspaper highlighted multiple examples of individuals — civilians with backgrounds such as chicken farm security guard and alleged pedophile — currently in Ukrainian custody and facing prosecution for aiding the Russian invasion. Those cases, where some form of legal process appears to be in place, contrast significantly with Gerashchenko’s insistence that Ukrainian law does not protect collaborators...

In his first official press briefing on the coronavirus pandemic since April, President Trump on Tuesday admitted that the public health crisis is likely to worsen as cases surge across the country and asked all Americans to wear masks in public. While Trump hailed his administration’s response to the pandemic and the work toward developing a vaccine, he bluntly disclosed what many Americans already know: that the crisis is likely to spread more before it can be contained. “It will get worse before it gets better,” Trump said of the pandemic that has infected close to 4 million Americans. “That’s...

Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House Friday morning, President Trump announced he will not attend this year's White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. He plans to hold a rally instead. "I’m going to hold a rally,†Trump said. “The dinner is so boring and so negative that we’re going to hold a very positive rally.â€Last fall, Trump said he "may" attend the dinner. This is the third year in a row he will be skipping the event. So-called comedian Michelle Wolf bombed so badly last year at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that this year, for the...

News broke late yesterday that confirmed an earlier report here regarding Fox News’ plan to try and do significant damage to the Donald Trump political campaign during the scheduled Thursday GOP debate moderated by Fox News. Part of the moderating panel is network personality, Megyn Kelly, a figure with whom Donald Trump has sparred with over the last few months following a question many felt to be terribly out of line and biased in which she accused Trump of hating women. In the last few weeks heading into the this week’s Fox News debate, the Trump campaign communicated to Fox...

A black Mississippi pastor has emerged to claim Sen. Thad Cochran's (R-MS) campaign paid “thousands” of Democrats $15 each to vote in the June 24 GOP runoff – and that he was part of the scheme. Rev. Stevie Fielder, an associate pastor at First Union Missionary Baptist Church in Meridan, Mississippi, says Cochran's campaign “told me to offer blacks $15 each and to vote for Thad.” Fielder, who was paid by freelance journalist Charles C. Johnson for the story, provided a new outlet launched by Johnson—GotNews.com—with four text messages from a person purporting to be Cochran campaign staffer Saleem Baird....

An elaborate modeling of housing prices and traffic congestion in cities across the US concludes that financing roads with comprehensive congestion priced tolls rather than taxes rather would provide major benefits in reducing housing prices and sub-optimal densities - 'sprawl' - as well as reducing the familiar delays and uncertain travel times. Moving to tolls or other direct road use charges will significantly improve overall welfare, economic efficiency and standards of living, the study says. Authors are Ashley Langer University of California Berkeley and Clifford Winston, Brookings Institution. The study is reported in Brookings-Wharton Papers on Urban Affairs 2008. ......

Through a long and circuitous route, I ended up at the Apple Store in Braintree, Massachusetts yesterday, and bought a MacBook. The where, what, and why of this transaction may be of interest. (Or it may not. I will at least point out that among my blogging pet peeves are the incessant morons out there who agonize over a PC purchase via a dialog with blog readers. Fear not, I've done it too. At least this time I'm just providing a post-mortem.) Why? Though I have a steady stream of PCs coming through here, I buy my own hardware, if...

The Ringling Bros. circus infiltrated animal rights groups, stole sensitive internal documents and illegally wiretapped circus opponents as part of a national conspiracy to disrupt animal rights groups, a lawyer told a Fairfax County, Va., jury Monday. The allegations by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals launched a trial five years in the making. It also culminates a lengthy legal battle between PETA and Kenneth Feld, whose family has owned the circus for nearly 40 years. During opening statements, PETA accused Feld of overseeing the espionage campaign against it and other animal rights organizations. Feld's attorney responded that infiltrating...

HONOLULU - A 19-year-old Mililani man is recovering at Queen's Medical Center after being impaled by what he says was a barracuda. Tonga "Piu" Loumoli was night diving off Kahana Bay near Kaaawa in Windward Oahu late Thursday night when a four-foot-long fish charged into his stomach. The fish wiggled loose, but left behind a six-inch-long gash and a tooth. A fishing buddy put Loumoli in a small dinghy and dragged him nearly a mile to shore and flagged down a police officer who called for help. Marine expert Craig Thomas said he has never heard of a barracuda charging...

Crosstown move means big tax break for rich lawyers In Phila., an opportunity zone gives partners a 15-year shield from some income taxes. Critics are outraged. By Nathan Gorenstein Inquirer Staff Writer More than 100 of the highest-paid people in Philadelphia will be exempted from state and city taxes on their income because they are moving across town. They are the partners at the law firms of Dechert L.L.P. and Woodcock Washburn L.L.P. Partnerships at top law firms can pay $500,000 a year or more, according to a Philadelphia Bar Association survey. The tax break for that salary could be...
