There’s no better way to get a window into the complicated world of a musician like Scott Stapp than by listening to their music. Scott Stapp’s latest album, The Space Between the Shadows, which dropped back in July, is driven by the song “Purpose for Pain.” The standout single mines the tumultuous period the singer endured since his last record in 2013 for inspiration. “Purpose for Pain” clearly carries a potent message, with a chorus that hits with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer: There’s gotta be more / Cause this life is insane / Gotta turn this around /...

Songs of musical rodents may offer insights into human conversationIn the understory of Central American cloud forests, musical mice trill songs to one another. Now a study of the charismatic creatures reveals how their brains orchestrate these rapid-fire duets. The results, published in the March 1 Science, show that the brains of singing mice split up the musical work. One brain system directs the patterns of notes that make up songs, while another coordinates duets with another mouse, which are carried out with split-second precision. The study suggests that “a quirky animal from the cloud forest of Costa Rica could...

A young man sits behind a piano and plays the first few notes to the beautiful ballad “Somewhere over the Rainbow” from the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. His silver-haired grandma sits in a wheelchair near him, ready to add the magic with her golden voice. Mind it; the music they create will take you to a wonderland in no time! Doug Manor, of Travelers Rest, South Carolina, shared this music video of his son Trevor and the young man’s granny Gwen Gustafson on YouTube in July 2017. Perhaps Gwen knows the melody all too well; after all, she...

Conquer yourself first — then the unkindness of others won’t conquer you Many lessons my boyhood best friend and mentor Jaybird taught me seemed foolish at the time, but along with me they matured, and now serve as guideposts in my life. One of those lessons was about kindness. Jaybird believed that no act of kindness, however small, is wasted. Even so, the old black man sometimes displayed a less-than-kindly nature when the actions of others angered him, but if I was close by he did his best to respond in a civil manner.

It was a joy to finally visit your church a couple of Sundays ago, and to worship with the believers there. You know IÂ’ve been looking forward to it for a long time. Just as you promised, the pastor is an excellent communicator and a man who loves GodÂ’s Word. His sermon was deeply challenging and led to some great conversations with my children. Now, you asked me why it looked like I wasnÂ’t singing. I know that was probably a little awkward, so thought IÂ’d send along a brief explanation. Primarily, itÂ’s becauseÂ…Â…I was not familiar with the...

Folks this is unusual for me, but I ran across a very pretty duet by twin sisters from Green Bay, Wisconsin. They appeared on The Voice on Tuesday the 29th. The performance was very nice and I wanted others to be able to enjoy it. This is a live performance on the show, and there are some interruptions, but the listen is well worth it. The song lasts about a minute and thirty seconds. I hope you enjoy these two young women's singing as much as I did.

Officer Robert Busch also stated that Jim Ochse “became very hostile and began yelling in my face” when he first approached him for singing in front of a crowded restaurant. Busch also wrote in his report that Ochse remained defiant even after being slammed to the pavement, keeping “his arms so tense that I could not move them or get the handcuffs on the defendant.” As a result, he charged Ochse with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, according to The Morning Call. ***** A 61-year-old man happily singing a Beach Boys song in front of a crowded restaurant in Pennsylvania...

Don’t Forget to Worship God! A Call to Better Liturgy from an Unlikely Source By: Msgr. Charles Pope We have discussed before many of the trends of modern liturgy and how the focus has shifted from God to the “assembly.†Too much of modern liturgy today is anthropocentric (focused on man).Back in the 1990’s, Thomas Day observed in the book Why Catholics Can’t Sing, that liturgy today often comes down  to “the aware, gathered community, celebrating itself.†Many modern songs go on at great length about how we are the gathered, we are the flock, we have been sung throughout all of...

Cheating. Bullying. Cybersexting. Hazing. Molestation. Suicide. Drug abuse. Murder. Scanning the headlines of the latest scandals in America's schools, it's quite clear that the problem is not that there's too much God in students' lives. The problem is that there isn't nearly enough of Him. With the malfunction of moral seatbelts and the erosion of moral guardrails, too many kids have turned to a pantheon of false gods, crutches and palliatives. They're obsessed with "Slender Man" and "Vampire Diaries." Alex from Target's hair and Rihanna's tattoos. Overpriced basketball sneakers and underdressed reality stars. Choking games and YouTube games. Gossip and...
