Poll: Shallenburger gains ground The Eagle-KWCH poll now shows Republican Tim Shallenburger within striking distance of Kathleen Sebelius. BY ALAN BJERGA The Wichita Eagle Voter support for Tim Shallenburger has surged in recent days to cut in half Kathleen Sebelius' early lead in the Kansas governor's race, according to the final campaign poll for The Wichita Eagle and KWCH 12 Eyewitness News. The poll, conducted by SurveyUSA late last week, placed Sebelius' support at 51 percent and Shallenburger's at 44 percent among likely voters, with 5 percent undecided or planning to vote for other candidates. The race could be even...

Poll shows little change in race By SARAH KESSINGER Harris News Service TOPEKA - Moving into the final stretch of the governor's race, Democrat Kathleen Sebelius held a 19-point lead over Republican Tim Shallenburger in a recent poll. Results of the statewide poll of 402 likely voters appear little changed from earlier polls by other media outlets. It was conducted for Harris News Service by MarketAide Services, a Salina-based marketing and communications firm. As TV ads intensified for both campaigns, the poll conducted Oct. 15-22 showed Sebelius with 53 percent support and Shallenburger with 34 percent. Another 12 percent said...

TOPEKA (AP) -- A new campaign commercial for Republican Tim Shallenburger tries to link his Democratic opponent in the governor's race to former President Bill Clinton. Narrated by a woman, the ad opens with video of Clinton. On the screen is a Sebelius quote: ''I was born a Democrat, raised a Democrat, converted to a new Democrat with Bill Clinton in 1988.'' The announcer says: ''So, that explains it. Kathleen Sebelius is a Clinton Democrat. That's why she thinks we believe her double talk. She learned from the best.'' The ad then says Sebelius voted to increase vehicle, sales, income...

(Topeka, Kansas) Just as he did in the Republican primary, Tim Shallenburger is executing his come from behind campaign. "We're excited that our polling shows we have shaved a 22-point deficit to nine points today," said Shallenburger spokesman Bob Murray. "We've said all long that we had a plan - and just like in the primary, it's coming together." The poll reveals that Shallenburger has moved substantially among Republicans, particularly among those who describe themselves as either somewhat conservative or moderate. This movement is most notable in western Kansas where Sebelius has had artificially inflated numbers due to her famous...

I received the following e-mail today: "Hi, this is Rachelle Colombo, Tim's office manager. Thanks for your suggestions, they have been considered and many of your ideas have been put into place. I think you'll like what you see on tv in the coming days. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Rachelle Colombo Shallenburger for Governor 785.862.1200 phone 785.862.1201 fax" This indicates that the campaign will finally begin to attempt countering Sebelius' "moderate" image on the air (I received a flier in the mail about her liberal record already in Sept.). Let's just say that while I am pessimistic (yesterday...

Sebelius, a Democrat, now holds a 20-point lead -- up from 17 points two weeks ago -- according to a SurveyUSA poll commissioned by KWCH 12 Eyewitness News and The Wichita Eagle. Folks, finally Tim Shallenburger is taking the gloves off. He sent a mailing out asking for donations, but it also criticized Sebelius and called her liberal. He also revealed some interesting info about an insurance company holding a fundraiser for her.....contrary to her statements that she does not take money from insurance companies. He also is finally running ads on tv now, though they are basically the same ads ran earlier. Let's hope for a LOW Democratic turnout......that might just give him the win....otherwise, I don't have much hope. Interestingly enough, there are a ton of Shallenburger signs popping up...

Poll puts Sebelius 17 points ahead BY JEAN HAYS The Wichita Eagle In the race for governor, Democrat Kathleen Sebelius has a wide lead over Republican challenger Tim Shallenburger, according to a poll by The Wichita Eagle and KWCH, Eyewitness News 12. The poll, taken over the weekend, is the first to be made public since the parties chose nominees in the August primary. With the election still 50 days away, Sebelius has a 17-point lead. She owes much of her popularity to female voters. Womensaid they prefer Sebelius to Shallenburger by a 2-1 ratio, regardless of their party. It's...

Republican Tim Shallenburger didn't plan on a career in public service. Democrat Kathleen Sebelius seemed destined for one. She's the daughter of a former Ohio governor. He was "just a normal kid from a normal family."Both served in the Kansas House, and both went on to statewide political office, Shallenburger as treasurer and Sebelius as insurance commissioner. And both will be on the ballot Nov. 5 when Kansas voters pick their next governor. Also running are Dennis Hawver of Ozawkie, the Libertarian Party candidate, and Ted Pettibone of St. Marys, for the Reform Party.Sebelius, 54, was introduced to politics in her father's campaigns;...

Okay folks....here is one of the few scientific polls I have seen and the results are good news for Shallenburger. In the STATEWIDE scientific poll aired on Channel 12 from Survey USA (not sure how many voters were polled), here are the results: Shallenburger: 35% Knight: 30% Kerr: 22% Bloom: 5% undecided: 8% Even more interesting is the results of the geographic regions. In the west, Shallenburger leads. In the east, Shallenburger leads by a larger margin than in the west, 40%. In the small area considered the south, Knight leads. Also interesting is that almost half of the voters...

To the Editor: The primary election is coming up quickly and a choice is to be made. While the other candidates are avoiding principled stands on issues, Tim Shallenburger is not afraid to put out his beliefs in freedom and improving the state. You have the opportunity to elect this kind of leader or choose another candidate that will continue the lack of leadership that led to the budget crisis. The other candidates just don't have the same spark in them. Bob Knight is running attack ads and pretends to be all things for all people. He claims to be...

Editorial from the Wichita Eagle: Ideas take money The school plan unveiled this week by GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim Shallenburger has some worthy stuff in it, including stiffer math and science graduation standards, and merit pay and tax credits for teachers. We also second the state treasurer's beliefs that too many kids have values "misshapen" by television and popular music, and that schools should have "unwavering rules of conduct." So it's too bad that so much of Mr. Shallenburger's plan is rendered irrelevant by the state's continuing budget bind -- and by the "no-new-taxes" candidate's refusal to itemize how he'd...

Campaign Update From Shallenburger For Governor Campaign June 4, 2002 A Message From Tim With just a week to go before the filing deadline it appears that the field is set for the Republican primary. In the weeks ahead I will be traveling the state to talk about the issues that face all Kansans. Voters will have a clear choice on August 6th when they go to the polls. My opponents have made no secret of the fact that they would not be opposed to raising taxes next year. This on the heels of the Kansas legislature passing one of...
