July 19, 2004 -- A retired NYPD cop shot and killed one of five assailants who tried to carjack his Cadillac in Newark yesterday, officials said. He was charged with illegal possession of a handgun after shooting the assailant with a .40-caliber pistol, Newark police spokesman Lt. Derek Glenn said. Police withheld the retired officer's name. Glenn said the ex-officer is licensed to carry a gun in New York, but not New Jersey.
