July 19, 2004 -- A retired NYPD cop shot and killed one of five assailants who tried to carjack his Cadillac in Newark yesterday, officials said. He was charged with illegal possession of a handgun after shooting the assailant with a .40-caliber pistol, Newark police spokesman Lt. Derek Glenn said.

Police withheld the retired officer's name.

Glenn said the ex-officer is licensed to carry a gun in New York, but not New Jersey.

The retired cop was on his way to Newark Airport at about 12:45 p.m. when the assailants, riding in an SUV, cut off his car, Glenn said.

Two gunmen ordered him out of the Cadillac, while a third jumped into the driver's seat and began to pull away.

The retired officer drew his gun and fired five times after one of the thugs aimed at him. The gunman was struck in the chest and killed.

We should just start giving these people medals for real, somebody should start a website to collect donations.

"Glenn said the ex-officer is licensed to carry a gun in New York, but not New Jersey."

Well if it's good enough for marriage, why isn't it good enough for CCW. Where is the ACLU. Full faith and credit clause case if you ask me.

Great point...my son's a NYC cop, but must leave his pistol home when he comes to see me in NJ.

Welcome to the upside-down, bizarro world of socialism that exists on the other side of the Looking Glass where right is wrong, good is bad, up is down, and carjackers are the victims and not the criminals.

I guess the best you can say is that he's still alive.

"retired cop was on his way to Newark Airport"

He may have been picking up someone, but he may have been doing security detail. I'm hope this case is going to get thrown out. Actually I hope it gets some steam to a national debate to inflame America to finally say no to the anti-gunners.

Yeah I have been wondering the same thing... why is full faith and credit only for far-left causes that couldn't possibly pass a legislature?

His only mistake was going to Newark in the first place. I worked there and if I was licensed to carry in NY, I would definitely try to be licensed in Jersey if I had to go there often enough.

I hope he brings up his problem to the FOP stooge standing behind the nearest politician.

New Jersey needs a house cleaning of their liberal filth. The retired officer saved his own life and probably many more to come. The officer needs to receive a medal of valor for taking out the trash. I would like to see a picture of those perps.(poor defenseless criminals)Fight Crime-Shoot First. My infinite mottos, " Have Glock Will Travel." We Dare Defend Our Rights!!! Bush/Cheney 2004

I'm convinced that being "liberal" is a mental disease.

There is never a day that I am not delighted to have left NJ behind. Funny thing was, my absolute last experience in NJ (where I was born and raised) was a toll taker on the Turnpike being incredibly rude to me when I asked a simple question about the toll. I thought it was somehow a poetic, fitting end to my life there.

NJ has a non-resident carry permit available, but the sources I counsulted said that they are RARELY issued, so it is pretty much a waste of time to apply.

I'm a PA resident with a PA CCW. I'm up for a job in Newark. If I get it, I'm going to commute home on the weekends.

As far as my weapon is concerned, as the saying goes, "I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6."

Shhhhh. You know not to ask those questions.

It always amazed me....the State of CT deems me responsible, and law abiding enough to issue me a CCW. However, as soon as I cross the border into NY, I am an instant felon.

Well, at least I can vote in Florida.
