One of the four Lee County men initially arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of NFL player Sean Taylor, has accepted a plea deal. In exchange for complete, truthful testimony in the upcoming trials for the other defendants, Venjah Hunte, 20, of Fort Myers, will plea guilty to second degree murder and armed burglary. He will then serve 29 years. Hunte's plea deal announcement coincides with the arrest of a fifth suspect in case, 16-year-old Timmy Brown, who was taken into custody last night. Under the plea agreement, without Hunte's satisfactory testimony, he would instead be sentenced to two...

On the first game after Sean Taylor passes Joes Gibbs gets an Unsportsman Like Conduct penalty calling back to back time outs with 8 seconds left. The Bills went from a 51 yard field goal attempt to win to a 36 yard gimmie from kicker phenom Lindell who has now 17 in a row FG streak. Bills win 17-16. I know Joe feels bad, I feel bad for him, but a head coach CAN’T make mistakes like that.

MIAMI - Police said two men and two juveniles arrested Friday in the shooting death of Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor went to his home intent on stealing, not killing. The suspects didn't expect Taylor to be there, said Miami-Dade County police Director Robert Parker, but Taylor was recuperating from a knee injury and had returned home from Washington. When Taylor surprised them, he was shot. Police spokeswoman Linda O'Brien identified the four suspects as: Venjah K. Hunte, 20; Eric Rivera Jr., 17; Jason Scott Mitchell, 17; and Charles Kendrick Lee Wardlow, 18. O'Brien said the charges for each had...

Actor Andy Garcia hailed his niece's slain boyfriend, NFL star Sean Taylor, as a ''free safety until the end'' who showed bravery in the last moments of his life to protect his family. Garcia is the uncle of Jackie Garcia, Taylor's girlfriend, who was in the house when Taylor was shot Monday morning, and who hid under the sheets with the couple's 18-month old baby when Taylor confronted his killer. Garcia and her family have kept quiet, declining to speak to the media. Their silence was broken by Andy, who spoke highly of Taylor. ''His heroic action on that tragic...

The Black KKK claimed another victim, a high-profile professional football player with a checkered past this time. No, we don't know for certain the circumstances surrounding Taylor's death. I could very well be proven wrong for engaging in this sort of aggressive speculation. But it's no different than if you saw a fat man fall to the ground clutching his chest. You'd assume a heart attack, and you'd know, no matter the cause, the man needed to lose weight. But we don't want to deal with ourselves. We take great joy in prescribing medicine to cure the hate in other...

If you're hoping to read about the on-field exploits of Sean Taylor, or a retrospective of his time with the Washington Redskins, it would probably be better if you cast your eyes to a piece elsewhere in this newspaper. Seriously, you should stop right here. Because we're going to have a different conversation in this space -- about the violent and senseless nature of the act that took his life, about trying to change course when those around you might not embrace such a change, about dying young and black in America, about getting the hell out of Dodge if...

There's a reason I call them the Black KKK. The pain, the fear and the destruction are all the same. Someone who loved Sean Taylor is crying right now. The life they knew has been destroyed, an 18-month-old baby lost her father, and, if you're a black man living in America, you've been reminded once again that your life is in constant jeopardy of violent death. The Black KKK claimed another victim, a high-profile professional football player with a checkered past this time. No, we don't know for certain the circumstances surrounding Taylor's death. Family friend Richard Sharpstein said Taylor's father told him the news around 5:30 a.m. "His father called and said he was with Christ and he cried and thanked me," said Sharpstein, Taylor's former lawyer. "It's a tremendously sad and unnecessary event. He was a wonderful, humble, talented young man, and had a huge life in front of him. Obviously God had other plans." Taylor died at Jackson Memorial Hospital,...

On the way to work today at 0615, I passed a huge crime scene on Old Cutler road. There were at least 7 vehicles, including the crime scene van. Rolls of yellow tape everywhere. I found out it was a home invasion that resulted in a home-owner being shot. Last week, I was on the way to work at about 0130, and saw two squad cars rolling through the area slowly, scanning with their searchlights. They stopped in front of the house and went in while I was driving by. Another co-worker who takes the same route also saw squad...
