MIAMI (Reuters) - The National Football League's Sean Taylor, a star defensive player for the Washington Redskins, was in critical condition after being shot at his home near Miami by a suspected intruder on Monday, police said.

Taylor, 24, who was the Redskins' first pick in the 2004 draft, was airlifted to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment, police said.

The Miami Herald newspaper reported that Taylor and his girlfriend were startled after hearing an intruder at the rear door of his home and said Taylor, who suffered severe blood loss, was wounded by a gunshot to the groin.

Police declined to confirm those details, including the Herald's report that Taylor faced possible brain injury due to blood loss, but said he remained in critical condition on Monday evening.

Police would not confirm story? Groin shot! Hope it wasn’t his girlfriend or another woman.

Prayers to his family. He was only 24? His mother assuming she is still alive must be devistated. That is a tragedy that no mother should face.

I’m sorry to hear this. What a sad tragic outcome...

That was an intesting place to get shot. Am I the only one who wonders what was behind the attempt to shoot him in that region? Was this a person unhappy with his sex life, or jealous of his girl friend or wife?

Did the guy have a gun to protect himself? Did he know the intruder?

It is sad to see a guy this young with a promising future, be killed.

My condolences go out to the family, friends and team members.

It could be an unfortunately aimed shot.

If he confronted them at the door and there was one shot that missed, one could have been near the heart and another in the panic or struggle in the leg.

This is was a murder, the phone lines were cut, a ‘burglar’ would not confront a homeowner in the bedroom (might be armed with a shotgun and you’re walking into your death) and there was a previous break-in while no one was home.

There was an incident before Sean’s maturation where he went with some friends to find people who stole his ATV and that is at the core of the insinuations that this was not a random act.

That said, no one died in that confrontation and all you need to do is piss off the wrong gangmembers and whereas in the past guys like Taylor would be off-limits, I think it’s now a badge of honor among certain scumbags to off the rich and famous.

The guy didn’t have a gun to protect himself because he was under probation, and if Florida is like Maryland, one of the standard conditions of probation is that the probationer cannot have firearms.

I am shocked. This puts a perspective on life, doesn’t it? Remember your Creator in the days of your youth.

“Must have hit the femoral artery.”

Exactly what was reported on Fox News moments ago.

there is no reason to let actual reporting get in the way of a good story, reporting seems to be more about telling a compelling story than actually presenting any facts like who, what, where and why

I wonder if Greta and the rest of the drive by media will rake his girlfriend over the coals as being the prime suspect just like they would have done to Mr. Taylor if she was the one that was shot.

Your post appears to be an attempt at humor. There are some times when it is totally inappropriate to joke around and this is one of those times.

It did. It's amazing that he did not bleed to death before they could even get him to the hospital. I remember an incident in my smallish NC city. A man was making a night deposit at the bank and was shot in the leg, severing the femoral artery. He died before they could get him to the local hospital which was practically right across the street. If I remember correctly, that man was shot with a shotgun, whereas Shawn Taylor was probably shot with a hand gun, but the femoral artery is one of the largest in the body and you can bleed out very quickly if it is severed.

Sadly, Shawn died sometime early this morning. There were no details, but earlier articles had said that they feared brain damage due to the massive loss of blood. Had he survived, he might not have been able to play the game he loved so much. Maybe this event, along with Michael Vick's now wasted opportunity, will be a lesson to other NFL players and will illustrate how quickly their fantasy life can be over and that they need to have their priorities straight. Apparently, Shawn was learning to do just that as he had really turned his life around since the birth of his one year old daughter. What a tragic end of a young life and a promising career! As a die-hard Cowboy fan, I have no love for the Redskins, but I have always liked and admired Joe Gibbs. My heart goes out to Shawn's family, friends, and the entire Redskin organization.

Why? Is there evidence you have showing that she did it?
