Actor Andy Garcia hailed his niece's slain boyfriend, NFL star Sean Taylor, as a ''free safety until the end'' who showed bravery in the last moments of his life to protect his family.
Garcia is the uncle of Jackie Garcia, Taylor's girlfriend, who was in the house when Taylor was shot Monday morning, and who hid under the sheets with the couple's 18-month old baby when Taylor confronted his killer. Garcia and her family have kept quiet, declining to speak to the media.
Their silence was broken by Andy, who spoke highly of Taylor.
''His heroic action on that tragic night saved their life and is a testament to his humanity and courage,'' Garcia said in his statement, which was provided to The Miami Herald through his manager, Joanne Colonna. ``His spirit will live forever, in our hearts and through the legacy of his achievements and the family he leaves behind.''
Garcia and Taylor met at Gulliver Prep School, an exclusive school in Miami-Dade county where Taylor shone on the field as a young man, leading the school to a state championship. Garcia was a successful soccer player.
The couple attended the University of Miami together and had their first child last year, also named Jackie.

Andy Garcia is a class act.
maybe the 7 years could make her common law?
When I heard this story the other day the first reflective thing that popped into my mind was the congruity of his position of ‘free safety’ and his actions at the end of his life. It was so obvious.
That's no longer the rule. Your state has to allow common law marriage. You don't just live together long enough to be considered common law, you have to hold yourself out as married to the community. The states below have common law marriage:
Alabama, Colorado, District of Columbia, Georgia (if created before 1/1/97), Idaho (if created before 1/1/96), Iowa, Kansas, Montana, New Hampshire (for inheritance purposes only), Ohio (if created before 10/10/91), Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Utah (from NOLO.com)
I used to practice law and would bang my head against the wall trying to get live-togethers to get married, even tho we had common law in our state. You have to prove it, for many people it isn't easy, and it's just a drag to deal with for benefits, etc. Why not just go to the JP and get it done?
Yup. A brave thing to do in Hollywood, unfortunately.
That was my first thought, too.
Is it possible there was more afoot than a robbery?
Yes, “Lost City” is a great and very honest movie, being handed around on CD from friend to friend as HoWood won’t touch it. I’ll have to purchase a copy to support Andy.
The “reason” for Sean Taylor’s murder will come to light soon enough. Meanwhile, his child is the legitimate heir to his fortune, so his girlfriend will be OK — financially at least.
You are not the first to ask that question. IMO, just common sense tells you yes. Taylor was trying to make a break from his old lifestyle, and he had a lot of people after him who where not happy with his choice.
Florida does not have common-in-law marriage since 1968
741.211 Common-law marriages void.—No common-law marriage entered into after January 1, 1968, shall be valid, except that nothing contained in this section shall affect any marriage which, though otherwise defective, was entered into by the party asserting such marriage in good faith and in substantial compliance with this chapter.
History.—s. 1, ch. 67-571.

And yet... they weren’t married... How sad.
why is that sad? Maybe for you, but that was their choice.
Its sad that as a man, he’s willing to give his life to protect a woman, and his child, but not make her his honest wife.
Sorry, that’s sad. Marriage means something more than living together and having kids. She is no widow, she has no covenant under which their obviously long term relationship belonged. Marriage is not simply a piece of paper.
Yes it was their choice, but it was still a sad choice indeed.
I am not like you and wouldn’t post self righteous, judgemental opinions about these victims. Save it for another thread.
You aren’t like me, obviously, because posting my pity is not self righteousness or judgemental.
The truth is not evil, and you obviously believe that it is.
