In the Middle Ages, there was a generally honored convention whereby criminals and political offenders could claim the Right of Sanctuary in a Church. Actually it’s an ancient tradition, up through the time of Henry the VIII, every civilization had places of Sanctuary. We have one, too. It’s called the United Nations.
