Message Delivered at Sam Davis's Press Conferences on Friday July 16, 2004 Ladies and Gentlemen of the press and voters of the 1st Congressional District. Two years ago I ran for this seat in Congress as an idealist. I believed then, that my fellow candidates and I would have a healthy debate about ideas followed by free and fair elections. The historic Sam Davis Home in Murfreesboro recently celebrated the addition of a new $1.5 million Visitors Center and Museum just in time for the holiday tours, which begin Friday. Planned removal of the word "Confederate" from a Vanderbilt University building brought to mind an earlier kindred act: deletion of Sam Davis from the Tennessee Blue Book after his being in it for years. Of these victims of the insatiable scythe of political correctness, excision of the "Boy Hero of the Confederacy" is the more important. The explanation should simply be that Sam was a hero. But lack of appreciation and understanding of heroes requires elaboration. Heroes are important because of what they tell us about human beings, our capabilities.
