Members of the Senate intelligence committee have requested the withdrawal of the Bush administration's choice for CIA general counsel, acknowledging that John Rizzo's nomination has stalled because of concerns about his views on the treatment of terrorism suspects. The decision followed a private meeting this week in which committee leaders concluded that the troubled nomination could not overcome opposition among Democratic members. It comes less than a month after a key member, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), announced his intention to block the nomination indefinitely. Rizzo, a career CIA lawyer, has drawn fire from Democrats and human rights groups because of...

I received the following email and thought it might be of interest to fellow Southern Californian. This is from my friend Steve Martini, a writer of novels, and although he is a little right of center he makes some strong points and you can see why he is a successful novelist. Date: Mon, 2 May 2011 14:35:12 +0700 One more screed I couldn't resist. Many of us grew up or lived in Southern California. Some of you still live there. Those were happier times given what is happening to the state now. I have followed with some interest the scant...

The man at the center of what may be the worst corruption scandal in California history was in court today, dozing off. Robert Rizzo, the former city manager of Bell, Calif., shocked the nation when it was revealed that his salary in office was $800,000 a year. Now, the Justice Department has uncovered a document that may help explain, in part, how city leaders financed their lavish salaries. The one-page memo was titled "Bell Police Department Baseball Game." "All of this was just a means by Rizzo to nickel and dime the community to death to get more money out...

Eight current and former Bell city officials charged in a sweeping public corruption case will make their first court appearance Wednesday morning. All the officials remained in county jail overnight. And getting out on bail might prove difficult for the highly paid officials because prosecutors are requiring that the official prove that their bail money is not coming from ill-gotten income. Officials said they wanted to make sure they didn't use money from Bell to get out of jail. This bail restriction is typically used in organized crime cases. Among those charged was Robert Rizzo, the former city manager of...

Covertly taken photos of CIA interrogators that were shown by defense attorneys to al Qaeda inmates at the Guantanamo Bay prison represent a more serious security breach than the 2003 outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame, the agency's former general counsel said Wednesday. John Rizzo, who was the agency's top attorney until December, said in an interview that he initially requested the Justice Department and CIA investigation into the compromise of CIA interrogators' identities after photographs of the officers were found in the cell of one al Qaeda terrorist in Cuba. "Well I think this is far more serious than...
