Negligent landlords—those who allow their properties to become dilapidated despite having tenants—are a significant predictor of violence in Richmond neighborhoods, even more than personal property tax delinquency, population density, income levels and other factors, according to a new study by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University. "Negligent landlords contribute significantly to violence in Richmond neighborhoods via the environment," said lead author Samuel West, Ph.D., an alum of the Department of Psychology in the College of Humanities and Sciences and an assistant professor of psychology at Virginia State University. "This impact was above and beyond the impact of those who live in...

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- A home near Jones Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue sits vacant. Inside, there is trash on the ground, house fixtures ripped out, profanity scribbled on walls and cigarette butts in the toilet. "It gives me a knot in my stomach. I don't even want to see what it looks like," homeowner Dawna Priest said. Priest purchased the home in 1998. Since 2004, she has rented it out. "Being a single woman and buying a house by myself it was really special to me," Priest said. For the last five years, the same renter has lived in the...

Own property and been renting it out in Florida for three years now. I'm sure we have freepers that have done this for decades and even some that got out of it. 1) We see the renter that asks? Do you accept Section 8? Aside from what that might allow, does section 8 allow for payment of last month rent. Is the security deposit in anyway dictated by that govt program? 2) We see potential tenants tell us about 'service animals' that we must take and allow in. We read that at least in Florida the statute does not allow...

My landlord told me a sheriff would deliver papers on or the next day saying i had to move in three days unless she sold the house first which meant I'd have as little as 2 weeks. I have a lease until Aug and a 1050 depisit. I didn't pay her for july to use . I thought by mutual agreement. Noe I get a summons for eviction and getting sued for 5000.00. What now?

In a move that provides relief to thousands of renters who face eviction but draws the federal government even deeper into the housing market, the loan giant Fannie Mae said Sunday that it would sign new leases with renters living in foreclosed properties owned by the company. It is the first nationwide effort to provide widespread relief to renters ensnared by the unfolding mortgage crisis, and it will effectively transform Fannie Mae —a government-controlled mortgage finance company — into a national landlord. It may also increase pressure on private lenders to establish similar programs and on lawmakers to pass renter relief....

Help renters be buyers As condo conversions spread, L.A. must innovate to provide affordable housing. By Marc B. Haefele, LOS ANGELES faces an enormous rental housing crisis. Condominium conversions are taking thousands of apartment units off the market, which is driving up rents even as the number of people who can only afford to rent increases. About 12,000 rent-controlled apartments have been converted into condos or demolished in the last five years — 8,000 of them since 2005. And...more than 60% of Angelenos live in apartments, and the average monthly rent is $1,600 citywide. But housing activist Paul DeSantis envisions...
