  • Morici: Friday's Jobs Report: Outlook Darkens for Economy, Obama

    CNBC ^ | Aug. 4, 2010 | Peter Morici
Friday, forecasters expect the Labor Department to report the economy shed 70 thousand jobs in July and unemployment rose to 9.6 percent. The massive permanent expansion in federal spending and regulatory oversight built into President Obama's budget is discouraging private hiring by raising fears of higher taxes and regulation. The president's moratorium on deep water drilling, though popular with environmental fundamentalists, kills jobs two ways-directly, by laying off workers in the oil and gas industry and indirectly, by sending too many consumer dollars abroad that could be spent here.

Fellow FReepers, I'm in need of a little help. I've been in an on-going debate with a family member who is an avid supporter of Obamacare. Earlier today I sent her a link to the story of the UFC fighter who equated the Canadian healthcare system to that of a third-world country. She replied with the usual lib-trash. I've gotten all that taken care of (in the debate sense of things), but I was wondering if some fellow had some numbers showing the approval ratings of the healthcare system in MA. Thanks in advance

January 04, 2010, 4:00 a.m. The Constitutional Crisis and the Security CrisisOn detainees, either ignore the judges or rein them in. By Andrew C. McCarthy ‘We do not want a situation where the executive is defying the courts,” a senior Obama administration official told the Washington Post. The spokesman was rationalizing the administration’s release of jihadist detainees, who are returning to the jihad and targeting Americans. Such defiance, said the official, would be “a recipe for a constitutional crisis.” Evidently, the president doesn’t appreciate that we already have a constitutional crisis. The administration claims that it simply had to...

Generation Cynical Sarah Carlsruh, November 6, 2009 “Cynicism exists. It’s toxic,” said Michael Josephson at an October 29th presentation on “High School Character” at the National Press Club. Josephson is president of the Josephson Institute of Ethics (JIE), which recently released its study on the link between high school attitudes and subsequent adult conduct. In its study, the Institute found that “younger generations are significantly more likely to engage in all forms of dishonest conduct than those who are older.” This raises the question, is the study measuring the increasing moral degradation of society or simply the fact that older...

A website which maps global surnames has been launched to help people find the origins of their name and how far it may have spread. The Public Profiler site plots eight million last names using data from electoral rolls and phone directories. The site covers 300 million people in 26 countries, showing the origins of names and where families have moved to. David Beckham, for example, has an English name, but there are more Beckhams in the US than Britain. But the region of the world with the highest concentration of people called Beckham was even further from the footballer's...

Wars of Ideas and THE War of Ideas Authored by Dr. Antulio J. Echevarria, II. Added June 12, 2008 Type: Monograph 62 Pages   Cost: Free The author discusses several types of wars of ideas in an effort to achieve a better understanding of what wars of ideas are. That knowledge, in turn, can help inform strategy. It is important to note, for instance, that because ideas are interpreted subjectively, it is not likely that opposing parties will "win" each other over by means of an ideational campaign alone. Hence, physical events, whether intended or incidental, typically play determining...

Moderate power firearms By Massad Ayoob Robert Ruark, the great American writer of the mid-Twentieth Century, was also a big game hunter. One of his most popular books, written on the latter topic, was titled Use Enough Gun. That has proven over the decades to be really good advice. That said, there are also a lot of people who use "too much gun." One of the last century's top authorities on guns and hunting was Jack O'Connor, a contemporary of Ruark's. O'Connor was an advocate of medium-powered hunting rifles: the .30-06 Springfield, the 7mm Mauser (also known as 7X57mm),...

A growing number of families are homeschooling. Many of these are doing so in order to accommodate their advanced and gifted learners. The advent of the Internet has made homeschool support and information readily available. People in cities, suburbs, and rural areas can access the same online bulletin boards, courses, and web sites. Though some parents spend a small fortune on home education, it can also be done on a very modest budget. Some families take great pride in making the most of their library cards and buying gently used textbooks, joining educational co-ops, or bartering for tutoring services. Why...

Last year children's librarian Debby At- well put a new set of encyclopedias on the shelf at Thomaston Public Library. A year later, it has yet to be touched. "I have never seen an encyclopedia lifted from the stacks," Atwell said. Librarians across the state report the millennials, the generation born roughly between 1980 and 2000, are not using libraries the way past generations did. Reference materials are gathering dust on the shelves of libraries everywhere. Reference librarians are being reassigned to other tasks, and library directors are pondering the future role of the traditional lending library. The trend has...
