An "active investigation continues" into the cold case killing of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, with help from "several private DNA laboratories," police in Boulder, Colorado, said in response to unearthed documents. On Friday, Fox News Digital reported on an unearthed 1997 DNA test that shows DNA evidence recovered under the girl's fingernails and from her clothes was not a match for members of the family and others close to the household just weeks after the crime. The document has reemerged as part of a trove of old case files discussed in a forthcoming book on late investigator Lou Smit, "Lou and...

In the context of another thread here at Free Republic, I chanced to use the term "moral elephantiasis," which I remember from a long ago reading of National Review. Out of curiosity, I typed those two words into Google, in quotes, and found a number of interesting things. One of the things I found was the full text of the original article which I read, at the age of 23 or so; that article had been read into the Congressional Record by then Georgia Congressman Larry McDonald. I transcribed the article (with significant help from the PDF OCR algorithm), and...

The new wage measure, often referred to “supercore” wages, pertains specifically to the services sector without housing, which includes for labor-intensive businesses like restaurants and salons. The Fed has been concerned about how many non-housing businesses in the service sector are still struggling to fill open jobs and keep employees from taking other gigs with better pay and benefits. Fed officials believe this dynamic has put too much pressure on wages and prices in those industries, which has kept inflation higher than the bank would like. The Fed seems likely to impose more economy-slowing rate hikes after the unemployment rate...

Would you rather be a front-desk clerk or "Director of First Impressions"? A barber or a "Grooming Manager"? How you answer could mean a significant difference in annual earnings. That's because companies routinely inflate workers' titles to avoid paying them in full for overtime work, according to researchers from the University of Texas and Harvard Business School. It's no secret companies go to great lengths to keep their labor costs down. What the new working paper reveals is that firms save a total of $4 billion in overtime payments a year simply by getting creative with titles. For employees, however,...

A new Zillow study discovered it takes four people to cover the cost of rent for an apartment in Raleigh. Chelsea Byrd went out on her own in a one-bedroom apartment, paying $700 a month. Since then, she has become a mom with a growing family, paying $1,400 for two bedrooms in Raleigh. "Where we are now, it’s pretty tight," she said. But the search for something bigger brings a more costly bill. "Everywhere else we’re looking right now is exponentially higher," she said. "These are things that should not be so hard for the average working person to attain."...

The early nineteenth century was a period of immense change in the United States. Economic, political, demographic, and territorial transformations radically altered how Americans thought about themselves, their communities, and the rapidly expanding nation. It was a period of great optimism, with the possibilities of self-governance infusing everything from religion to politics. Yet it was also a period of great conflict, as the benefits of industrialization and democratization increasingly accrued along starkly uneven lines of gender, race, and class. Westward expansion distanced urban dwellers from frontier settlers more than ever before, even as the technological innovations of industrialization—like the telegraph...
