A new Zillow study discovered it takes four people to cover the cost of rent for an apartment in Raleigh.
Chelsea Byrd went out on her own in a one-bedroom apartment, paying $700 a month. Since then, she has become a mom with a growing family, paying $1,400 for two bedrooms in Raleigh.
"Where we are now, it’s pretty tight," she said. But the search for something bigger brings a more costly bill.
"Everywhere else we’re looking right now is exponentially higher," she said. "These are things that should not be so hard for the average working person to attain."
Using minimum wage data from the Economic Policy Institute, Zillow analyzed how many full-time minimum-wage jobs would be required to afford the typical rent in the 50 largest U.S. cities and in the U.S. overall. Rent data used in this study is from monthly changes from the Zillow Observed Rent Index and the 2021 5-year American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau for one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and overall rentals.

I think I see the 'problem'......................
A person making minimum wage would have to work 144 hours a week to afford a typical one-bedroom apartment – that's six full days, around-the-clock.
Minimum wage as a living wage? Again with this crap?
Since then, she has become a mom with a growing family, paying $1,400 for two bedrooms in Raleigh.
I'm so old I remember part of family planning meant having two parents to help with the costs of raising a "growing family".
Does her husband work?? you know the Childrens Father?? or is that mean to even ask?
Newflash: everything is much more expensive than it used to be.
Appears to be in the US. Maybe North Carolina?
Chelsea needs to keep her knees together.
If everyone living alone in a one bedroom apartment shares their bed with another of the same or opposite sex market forces would bring down the costs of rent. Not only that the people would be a whole to happier!
You see this is smaller cities and suburbs too. Drive by a home and you can see 4 to 6 cars stacked together. Mostly young folks but there are older ones too. The apartment stock is not growing and there’s no where to go. Most of the jobs being created are low paying service jobs.
Its a good thing we have millions of illegals entering the country to drive down wages, while driving up demand for housing.

Of the population in the 50 largest cities, what percentage of people are only earning minimum wage, discounting students and / or minors?
The best birth control is simple aspirin
Take one pill.
Hold it between your knees.

An ASPIRIN held tightly between the knees..................
The inflation is winning and the workers are losing.
The solution is simple. Sneak into Mehico. Wade back north across the Rio Grande wearing an LA Dodgers baseball cap and American flag T-shirt while carrying a Mexican flag. Turn yourself in to the Border Patrol. They’ll change the kids’ diapers and you’ll be living the life of luxury and partying in a five hundred dollar a night hotel room in New Yawk in no time.
$700/month for a one bedroom apartment is extremely cheap.
It more than double that here in southern NH. My son was paying $1750 an hour NW of Boston. He moved in with a buddy recently to save money. He now splits a two bedroom townhouse with him for $1200/month.
I had a rented house in the 60s, fully furnished. $90 month.

Is a father part of this sob story?
Who here is old enough to remember when men saw it as honorable to propose only when they knew they could support a household that included the young children that were likely to follow?
And honorable women of course would prepare to live modestly, if need be, for a husband they loved and committed to.
The expectation was that even men with little education could and would work themselves up from minimum wage work by being conscientious and reliable employees.
Recently, south of Denver, CO, studio apartmeents were being advertised for $1650/mo.
