“I really believe when you have a tournament like Wimbledon that they do what they want. You cannot say to another event that they have to do another thing. That’s my opinion. Why if Wimbledon have they own rules, why Roland Garros cannot have it?”

Rain or shine, clay or mud, Sunday or Monday, Rafael Nadal rules Roland Garros. The man they call "Rafa" won his record seventh French Open title Monday, returning a day after getting rained out to put the finishing touches on a 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Novak Djokovic. He denied Djokovic in his own run at history — the quest for the "Novak Slam." The match ended on Djokovic's double-fault, a fittingly awkward conclusion to a final that had plenty of stops and starts, including a brief delay during the fourth set Monday while — what else? — a...

He was clearly out of sorts, failing to chase down balls that he would ordinarily return easily. "This is a difficult day for me," Nadal said. "Today I can't...

After Rafael Nadal waited out three rain delays totaling almost 2 ½ hours to win his first Wimbledon title two years ago in a match for the ages against Roger Federer, one stoppage of less than two hours Monday at the U.S. Open couldn’t dampen his pursuit of history. Neither rain, nor thunder and lightning, nor Novak Djokovic taking the first set against him all tournament kept the 24-year-old Spaniard from his appointed round with that history as he completed a career Grand Slam with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over the third-seeded Serb. He became only the seventh...

And, yes, he does sign with his right hand because it is only tennis that this great champion does as a southpaw, which leaves you wondering how good he would have been playing as nature intended. Better? Not as awkward to play? Whatever the answer, the only thing that...
