(AP) — A fire ripped through a distribution center in North Carolina for the QVC home-shopping television network early Saturday, causing extensive damage to the facility, officials said. For nine years, Layvonne McAuley worked her job processing returned merchandise at the Rocky Mount QVC Distribution Center. When she swiped her security card to go to work Wednesday, it didn’t work. She was among several hundred workers who were accused of possibly making improper withdrawals from the company’s 401(k) plan. McAuley is livid. “This is so unjust,” she said. Many stores are seeing sluggish sales and now TV shopping seems to be taking a hit, too. QVC is cutting its workforce in a big way. The television shopping company, based in West Chester, PA says it will have to eliminate 900 jobs over the next 14 months. The company also says it's adding 200 new jobs, so there's a net loss of about 700 positions. QVC says the cuts will save the company nearly 40 million dollars in 2009.
