Hiring Richard Dugas as the top executive at PulteGroup was “perhaps the biggest mistake of my career,” the founder of the Atlanta homebuilder said Monday. Bill Pulte, the company’s former chairman and largest shareholder, said in a letter to the company’s board of directors that many of the company’s talented employees had left or been fired during Dugas’ tenure as CEO, and that its financial performance has stagnated. KB Home may be the fifth-largest U.S. home builder, but it was No. 1 when it came to pay for its chief executive. Over the last three years, former CEO Bruce Karatz made $232.6 million in compensation. That's nearly three times what the chief executives earned at Pulte Homes Inc. and Centex Corp., which are bigger and more profitable. Cites April, May orders that were 29 percent off same period last year DETROIT - Pulte Homes Inc., one of the nation's biggest homebuilders, on Friday cut its full-year financial forecast, citing a sharp drop in orders in April and May compared with a year ago. Bloomfield Hills-based Pulte projected earnings between 85 cents and 95 cents for the current second quarter, and from $4.70 to $5 per share for the full year. In April, the company had forecast 2006 earnings between $6 and $6.25 per share.
