Google has accused Britain of threatening to stifle free speech in an escalation of US opposition to online safety rules. The regulator Ofcom is planning to prevent posts going viral that include “potentially illegal” material, such as hate speech or calls to violence. However, Google warned that proposals to require tech giants to detect and suppress such “potentially illegal” posts risk “undermining users’ rights to freedom of expression”. Google said the measures would “necessarily result in legal content being made less likely to be encountered by users, impacting users’ freedom of expression, beyond what the [Online Safety] Act intended”. Ofcom...
  • Let's Be Honest: The system is set up for hospitals to profit from COVID

If you had a financial incentive to do something that wasn't exactly honest, would you abandon your principles and take the cash? Apparently, that's what many medical providers and hospitals in America have been doing, especially since the beginning of the Biden administration. The numbers are staggering — both in money hospitals took in and the very real possibility that their actions caused people to die. If the accusations are true, what happened is truly evil and, I think, points directly to a cause: the removal of God and morality from society, replacing these brakes with what passes for modern...
  • Profit Motive Too Irresistible: US Companies Are 'Hostages' to China. Heads of U.S. corporations don’t dare to criticize the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) even in private settings

Here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where I live, the Ebola outbreak is very much a local issue. Playing tennis with some buddies this morning, I remarked during a break: "can you imagine what a disaster this Ebola thing must be for Texas Presbyterian? Who's going to want to go there? The whole hospital could go out of business!" Pretty obvious, no? It would be akin to the financial disaster that would ensue for a restaurant if someone who dined there died of food poisoning. Well, obvious to you and me, perhaps. But not to Ed Schultz. On his MSNBC...
  • Why John Oliver is wrong about native advertising

Comedian John Oliver recently took an admittedly pretty funny shot at the concept of native advertising. His basic point was that the blurring lines between objective content and marketing pieces threatens journalistic integrity and consumer trust in the media. Now, I find Oliver to be a funny and talented guy, and he’s done some spot-on stuff (particularly his most famous piece on net neutrality). However, on this topic, he’s really off-base. Native advertising is everywhere, and all signs point to it becoming even more ubiquitous, particularly as news outlets try to come up with meaningful business models for their online...
