As of now, the 2012 Republican Presidential Primary race is all about Texas Governor Rick Perry and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, with no other candidate reaching double-digit support. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely GOP Primary voters shows Perry with 28% support and Romney capturing 24%. Before Perry entered his first debate, the Texan held an eleven point advantage over Romney, 29% to 18%. Trailing far behind the frontrunners are former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at nine percent (9%), Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann at eight percent (8%), Georgia businessman Herman Cain with seven percent (7%) support...
  • Perry for President Announcement Expected By End of August

Advisers and elected allies of Texas Gov. Rick Perry tell Whispers that the Republican will join the crowded field of presidential hopefuls by the end of August... Perry's entry will be a "game changer," said Mark Meckler, cofounder of the Tea Party Patriots, the nation's largest umbrella group for the movement. "It changes the equation because he has a record to run on." That record, added Meckler, is the "Texas miracle" of growth and economic prosperity.... Polls show substantial support for Perry. Gallup today has him winning in the South and within striking distance of leading the pack in the...

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour’s fundraising lags behind other Republican presidential aspirants, but he’s putting his money where his mouth is if he’s serious about a 2012 run. Barbour’s federal PAC gave $5,000 apiece to state GOP organizations in Iowa and New Hampshire, the critical first and second presidential voting states, respectively. Those donations were disclosed in campaign finance reports filed Thursday. Barbour, who just finished a term as chairman of the Republican Governors Association, also gave to 11 other state GOP committees, but those donations were all for $2,500 or less. Barbour spent $174,248 and raised $108,152 between Oct. 14...

INDIANAPOLIS — Gov. Mitch Daniels has a long list of things he wants to get done over the new few months in Indiana, from education reform to fixing a broke unemployment insurance fund. But it seems wherever he goes these days, the question most asked about what he’s going to do is this: Are you running for president? A variation of the question came up Monday morning at a national conference of grain elevator operators where he was the keynote speaker; the day before it came up at the Indianapolis Colts-Dallas Cowboys game when he was shaking hands with football...
  • Not This Mitt Again (Mitt Romney hasn't changed a bit)

Mitt Romney hasn't changed a bit, and carries even more damning baggage. The serious rumblings are already out there. Undaunted by the failure of one of the most expensive presidential primary runs in history, Mitt Romney apparently wants to take another shot at getting the GOP’s nomination. Utah Senator Orrin Hatch is “quite sure” Romney will run, and has said that the former Massachusetts governor “would be my preference.” Sadly, there’s a hoary tradition in the GOP that certain establishment-favored candidates, even though they’re not the best available, have somehow earned “their turn.” That belief has usually led the party...
