Hazel Crest police searching for an escaped prisoner from the Metropolitan Correctional Center, traversed back yards in the south Chicago suburb....a Rhodesian Ridgeback (who the owner and others maintain was a friendly dog) was somehow perceived as a threat - and escaped the owner's yard (likely because police opened the gate themselves). And the answer: shoot and kill the dog? Unbelievable isn't it? But this is - according to reports - exactly what happened. This is the second occurrence in the Chicago area in a month of a friendly dog shot by police. A 7-month old pup survived when an...

GALT, Calif. -- They've been finding hidden bombs, drugs and corpses for years, using their sense of smell to locate what their human handlers would otherwise have to see in plain sight. Now dogs are being deployed in prisons to help curb one of the most serious problems confronting corrections officials: smuggled cell phones. It turns out that cell phones smell. And their distinct odor can lead a well-trained canine to a device hidden under a mattress, stashed into a wall or tucked into a fan or radio. Inmates use them to arrange drug deals, plot escapes and attacks, coordinate...

In an almost surreal but sympathetic account of radical leftist protesters of the Group of Eight Summit in Germany, Washington Post reporter Craig Whitlock is forwarding the protester’s outrage of the moment: German police have taken "scent samples" of protest organizers for police dogs to locate them in a crowd. For those of you who suspect protesters are easily smelled at 50 feet, Whitlock explained: The German government has spared no expense -- spending upward of $100 million -- to safeguard this week's summit, which brings together leaders of the industrial countries known as the Group of Eight. German authorities...

Mon 11 Jun 2007 Sniffer dogs sacked for lewd behaviour ETHAN MCNERN TWO Thai strays who became ace sniffer dogs at an airport near the notorious "Golden Triangle" opium-producing region have been fired for urinating on luggage and sexually harassing female passengers. The pair, Mok and Lai, had been plucked from obscurity under a programme initiated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej to turn strays into police dogs, the Bangkok Post said on Sunday. They won plaudits from police for their work in sniffing out drugs at northern Thailand's Chiang Rai airport, near the border with Laos and Myanmar. But so many...

Judge George Greer ruled that the State of Florida has no right to take custody of Terri Schiavo, which ruling came hours after an appeal by Terri's parents to re-insert the feeding tube was refused by the U.S. Supreme Court. Meanwhile, another hearing was scheduled tonight before US District Judge James D. Whittemore .. the same judge who previously heard and denied the request subsequent to the 'de novo' intention of the law past last weekend by the Congress and signed by President Bush, in an effort to confirm that no stone was left unturned before Terri would endure legally...

AB Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport has for several months been quietly running a unique experiment in which passenger security is entrusted to, along with humans, a hybrid of dog and jackal. Our reporter went to the airport to take a closer look at the experiment Experts say the dog's sense of smell is 50 times as good as man's. This is of course an average estimate, but the fact remains: The dog has a superior nose compared to the human one. Today the danger of terrorist attacks made this quality highly important. There are dogs specially trained for bomb-sniffing. Still,...
