The tenor, paired with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, is speaking for a global effort called "Hear the World" to raise awareness about hearing loss and to offer the latest technology to those in need — especially in developing countries. Hearing aids will be delivered to poor children in the Guatemalan jungle and hearing-challenged youths in Pretoria, South Africa, will be taught how to function alongside classmates who hear. The Los Angeles Opera will spend a $6m (£3.2m) gift from two philanthropists on staging its first production of Richard Wagner's epic Ring cycle. The four-opera production, which takes days to perform, took 28 years for the German composer to write. Tenor Placido Domingo, who is general director of the opera company, thanked Eli and Edythe Broad - who made money from house building - for the donation. Tenor Placido Domingo has been given a five-year contract extension as general director of the Los Angeles Opera. The 65-year-old Spanish opera star - one of the renowned Three Tenors - will now remain in his post until 2011. Domingo joined the company as artistic director in 2000, before being promoted to general director in 2003. He has been the Washington National Opera's general director since 2003 and is due to return to performing with the New York Metropolitan Opera next month.
