Among Catholic doctrines, those pertaining to the papacy tend to be the most misunderstood and contested by non-catholics. The following verses show the biblical basis for Catholic teaching on the primacy of Peter, the office of the papacy being established by Christ and allusions to the doctrine of infallibility. These doctrines reached their full development in the life of the Church only after centuries of contemplation and study, in councils and through the actions of the popes. And we should never forget that since the Church is likened by Christ to a “mustart seed” that grows and develops organically from...

They leave for different reasons. Some saw hypocrisy. Others were hurt by those in authority. Still more disagree with a Church teaching. Sometimes, all they're waiting for is an invitation back. And often, it's not the Catholic Church itself that the "fallen away" have a beef with but their particular experience of it."Evangelize at all times; when necessary, use words," St. Francis of Assisi is known to have said. Many people who no longer consider themselves Catholic experienced the reverse of this rule in their encounters with Catholics early in life. There are no numbers on how many people have...

How weird it is that I, a layman, had to debate a Catholic bishop on the issue of the problem of homosexuality in the priesthood. It's weird because I was defending the Catholic Church's perennial teaching about this issue and Bishop Gumbleton was taking the position that their being homosexuals in the priesthood is not a problem. It was a brief debate, all of 20 minutes ... but it was enough time to see the two massively different approaches to this issue that Bishop Gumbleton and I took. What are your thoughts? Listen to the show here... [with link to...

This written debate on sola scriptura between Patrick Madrid, publisher of Envoy Magazine, a leading Catholic journal of apolgetics, and Douglas Jones, editor of Credenda/Agenda Magazine, a Reformed evangelical Protestant journal, appeared recently in Credenda/Agenda. It was agreed that Doug would select and frame the debate theme, he would have the first *and* last comment in the exchange, and each response would be limited to no more than 115 words.

[Catholic author Patrick Madrid, Publisher of Envoy Magazine, writes:] In a recent issue of San Diego News Notes there appeared an interview with Paul O'Callaghan, a former cradle Catholic who abandonded the Church to become an Orthodox priest. I found his rationale for leaving the Church in an attempt to find Tradition to be theologically naive. His sometimes inaccurate perceptions about the Catholic Church and its teachings were also problematic. But the biggest dissapointment was his distorted understanding of how the early Church viewed the function and authority of the Bishop of Rome: "The Orthodox view the role of the...
