    An appellate court in Milan upheld on Wednesday the conviction of 23 Americans charged with kidnapping an Egyptian cleric in 2003 and ordered even harsher sentences. All but one of the Americans are Central Intelligence Agency operatives.

    An Italian judge has ordered 26 Americans to stand trial for the kidnapping of an Egyptian man, setting up the first criminal examination of the CIA's "extraordinary rendition" programme. Two former Italian intelligence chiefs were also among those indicted by Milan judge Caterina Interlandi yesterday. Osama Mustafa Hassan, an Egyptian cleric, was allegedly abducted on a Milan street on February 17, 2003, and taken to a high-security prison outside Cairo where he claims he was tortured. He was released on Sunday.
