... I went to see Interstellar mainly because I was tickled by the fact that the bad guy is called "Dr Mann". But I took along my kids, and I'm glad I did because it's a good film to see with children or parents. Underneath all the saving-humanity space-travel stuff, the only relationship that matters in the movie is between dad Matthew McConaughey and his daughter. I'm tiptoeing around the startling evolution of that relationship, but let's just say that the, ahem, role reversal of their final scene together had my boys talking all the way home. Interstellar is directed...

The first glimpse I ever had of Robert Oppenheimer was in an episode of the landmark British television documentary series The World at War. (Soon to be the topic of this column.) It was in Episode 24 ("The Bomb"), which tells the story of the American nuclear program from its inception to the dropping of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Oppenheimer does not play a huge part until they get to the first test of the "Gadget", on July 16, 1945 at the White Sands Proving Grounds, roughly midway between Albuquerque and El Paso. He...

Over the course of his 27-year career, Nolan Ryan won 324 games and struck out an all-time best 5,714 batters. It was presumably those feats of longevity and performance that made him a first-ballot Hall of Famer and placed him on a short list of the greatest pitchers of all time. Ryan is also remembered, however, for being involved in one of the most memorable brawls in baseball history -- and being someone you absolutely do not want to mess with. On Aug. 4, 1993 -- the final season of Ryan's career -- the righty toed the rubber for a...

New ESPN star Katie Nolan jokingly called President Donald Trump a "f------ stupid person" this week on Viceland's "Desus & Mero" late night comedy show, less than a month after the company revised its social media guidelines, imploring its staff to steer clear of politics. Appearing Wednesday night on the nearly two-year-old Vice Media channel, Nolan and the comedy duo of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero were discussing hand gestures and memes that could be associated with white supremacists. One of the co-hosts told Nolan a thumbs-up means "white power," noting President Trump often uses the gesture.

"The Man Without A Country", a short story, written by Edward Everett Hale, in 1863, as the Civil War was raging It is about an Army officer that has committed treason during the Revolutionary War, and has shouted out, before sentencing after being convicted, that he wishes, no longer, to hear any mention of the United States of America. He gets his wish as the judge sentences him to life in prison to be served aboard only USA, navy ships that never touch the shores of the USA. He comes to love the USA...but no one will talk to him...

Period has become increasingly challenging at the box office, not to mention in recent times marquees have been inundated with World War II fare, particularly films starring Brad Pitt. But when director Christopher Nolan embraces the historical subject, it’s a different story, and Warner Bros is celebrating a win for its older-male-skewing Dunkirk this weekend with $50.5 million — a figure that not only beat tracking, but the total $40M stateside ticket sales of Pitt’s November WWII bomb Allied.

Republican Stewart Mills said on Monday that he will request and pay for a recount of votes cast in the northern Minnesota congressional district race he lost narrowly to Democratic U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan. Mills lost by 2,009 votes out of 356, 971 cast in the Eighth Congressional District — or about half a percentage point — which is too large to trigger an automatic recount under state law. […] “We’re not alleging voter fraud, we’re not saying anyone got the numbers wrong, but there’s enough questions that need to be answered that can only be answered by a hand...

Hollywood has pulled out all the stops for the silver screen recreation one of the biggest operations of World War 2. On Thursday 325 extras lined up on the beaches of Dunkirk, in the exact spot where 76 years ago this week 338,000 British, French and Belgian troops were evacuated in Operation Dynamo. Director Christopher Nolan assembled his men alongside a few cardboard cut-outs to bolster the troops, as he continues shooting his epic new movie which stars the likes of Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance and One Direction singer Harry Styles.

In the wake of the awful massacre in Aurora, Colorado, we're reading al lot of criticism directed at Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight," the second feature in the director's trilogy and the one with the memorable "Joker" character that apparently inspired the alleged movie theatre shooter. The problem with much of this criticism, however, is that it portrays the movie as the exact opposite of what it really is. [...] If I had to choose the most inexpressibly moving and inspiring moment of humanity of any film released over the least five years, it would be the sequence in "The...

From a purely cinematic standpoint, director/co-writer Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" is a genuine masterpiece. Actually, it's a triumph. Surpassing the extraordinary hype and expectations surrounding the conclusion to his epic trilogy seemed impossible, and yet somehow Nolan achieved just that. The fact that I'm even debating whether or not "Rises" surpasses its perfect predecessor speaks volumes. Without giving anything away -- without telling you if it's tragic or happy or bitter or sweet -- let me just say that the final few minutes of "Rises" represent one of the most intensely satisfying movie moments of my life. And...

Let's take a moment to toast director Christopher Nolan before anyone gets the chance to see his latest film, "The Dark Knight Rises." Yes, it's premature to celebrate a film before it opens, but Nolan's approach to filmmaking deserves kudos no matter what we see come July 20. "Rises" won't be shown in 3D, a testament to Nolan's ability to fight Hollywood's power structure - and win. The film will be the last in his Batman franchise. No drawn-out fourth installment, no sense that the series is running on fumes. This is a trilogy, he tells us, and it's hard...

Batman is ready for his closeup again. Shooting is now underway on Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures' The Dark Knight Rises, the third and presumably final chapter in director Christopher Nolan's epic trilogy on the Caped Crusader. Christian Bale once again reprises his role as Bruce Wayne and his gruff-voiced alterego. Joining him will be an all-star cast including newcomers Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, better known by her meow de plume Catwoman, Tom Hardy as the villainous Bane, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Gotham City cop John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises boardmember who helps Bruce...

Before Jerry Pournelle began writing science fiction; before, that is, he teamed with Larry Niven to write the classic Lucifer’s Hammer1, he was a political scientist. Pournelle was dissatisfied with the traditional Left-Right distinction. One variable describing such a complex situation “produces political absurdities.” Just because one is not of the Left does not mean that he is of the Right. At least, not in the way the “Right” is usually meant. Even two dimensions is not enough to capture the subtleties of any person’s beliefs. There are people calling themselves Catholics who support abortion, for instance. Just as there...

Despite the fevered speculation about the future of Batman in the wake of the spectacular success of The Dark Knight two years ago, we've been given very little in the way of hard facts about the future of the series. That is, until now. A new interview with director Christopher Nolan, in which he talks about his plans for the third film, as well as his overseeing role on Superman, appears to outline where the man who brought Batman back from the horrors of the Joel Schumacher years sees the character going. And it may not make comfortable reading for...

Bellevue tax collector Joe Nolan, 53, plans to announce today he's challenging U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, in the 2010 general election. Nolan, a Republican, said he's "become more and more concerned about the path we've taken," specifically bank and insurance company bailouts, he said. He said he opposes the cap-and-trade legislation, which could come up for a final vote in Congress this year, as being too restrictive of energy production. Doyle beat Green Party candidate Titus North in the 2008 election 91.3 percent to 8.7 percent. He ran unopposed in the general election in 2006, in an overwhelmingly...

9/11 widow Ellen Mariani(Derry, N.H.) says George W. Bush is a gangster. We talk to her and her lawyer Philip J. Berg: Ellen Mariani last saw her husband Louis Neil early on the morning of September 11, 2001, at Logan Airport, where they were taking different flights to Los Angeles for a daughter’s wedding. He hadn’t gotten his tickets until the last minute, and couldn’t get on her flight, but there were seats open on Flight 175. Neil Mariani died when that plane crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center, and after rejecting a settlement offer of...

CN8’s Barry Nolan says Fox News bigfoot Bill O’Reilly is “a mental case,” and Nolan’s crazy mad that the local Emmy Awards will honor Mr. No Spin Zone at their 31st annual back-slapfest next month. “I am appalled, just appalled,” Nolan told the Track. “He inflates and constantly mangles the truth . . . and his frequent target is the ‘left-leaning’ media - the ones who do report the news fairly. And those are the same people who will be sitting in the room honoring him.” Nolan, citing an Indiana University study that claims O’Reilly - a former Channel 7...
