Each hour a person spends squinting into a smartphone or staring at a screen increases their risk of nearsightedness, a new evidence review suggests. Every daily one-hour increment in digital screen time is associated with 21% higher odds of myopia, researchers report. What's more, the risk continues to increase as more time each day is spent with screens, researchers found. "Myopia risk increased significantly from one to four hours of screen time and then rose more gradually thereafter," the research team wrote. The risk of nearsightedness is doubled for people who spend four or more hours with a screen every...
  • Has anyone had LASIK eye surgery?

    05/16/2024 8:12:10 PM PDT · by Jamestown1630 · 72 replies
Has anyone here had LASIK eye surgery, and have you been happy with the results? I'd especially like to hear from those who have had it on one eye. I have one eye that is very good, and one with astigmatism that seems to get worse as I age. I'm thinking of having Lasik on the bad eye. Thanks very much to anyone who has the time to reply.

Space does plenty of whacky things to astronauts' bodies, like deteriorating their muscle mass and making them on average 5 centimeters (2 inches) taller. But scientists have uncovered another, more subtle side effect — space is totally ruining astronauts' perfect eyesight. In fact, 80 percent of astronauts who come back from long-duration missions display symptoms of a mysterious eye condition that causes nearsightedness, Shayla Love reports for The Washington Post. While it's a myth that all astronauts have to have natural 20/20 vision (they're allowed to have corrective laser surgery) by the time they launch, their vision does need to...

WASHINGTON - There's a new option for people who suffer from extreme nearsightedness, whose world loses its crisp edge just a few inches from their noses. The first implantable lens for nearsightedness was approved Monday by the Food and Drug Administration (news - web sites). A surgeon slips the lens through a small incision and implants it in front of the natural lens. Like a photographer swiveling a camera lens into focus, the tiny hard plastic lens works behind the scenes to help the eye create in-focus images. An estimated 53 percent of Americans use contact lenses or eyeglasses to...
