CONCORD, Mass. — Five musket balls that were fired during the event known as "The Shot Heard Round the World" on April 19, 1775, were recently discovered at Minute Man National Historical Park in Concord, Massachusetts. National Park Service archeologists discovered the musket balls while conducting compliance activities in preparation for the park’s Great American Outdoors Act project. According to the National Park Service, early analysis of the 18th-century musket balls indicates they were fired by colonial militia members at British forces during the North Bridge fight. The North Bridge battle site is a key location within the National Historical...

Committee on Art in Public Spaces deems image ‘not appropriate’ Officials at Yale University recently censored a stone work of art on campus depicting an armed Native American and Puritan side by side, which has been described as a “hostile” image by the Ivy League institution’s alumni magazine. The stone carving was edited to cover up the Puritan’s musket, while the Native American’s bow was left as is, reports Yale Alumni Magazine. The decision to censor the carving was made by both head librarian Susan Gibbons and Yale’s Committee on Art in Public Spaces, the latter of which advises President...

The old musket pictured above was retrieved from Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin two years ago.  It appears to be a "trade musket" that was manufactured about 200 years ago.   From boatingwinnebago.com: “It was around 11 a.m. on Sept. 4 and as soon as I saw the barrel I knew what it was,” he said. There — hooked on the end of his anchor — was a flintlock musket, rusted and weathered by the passage of time. “This is crazy. It’s like one of those tall fish tales,” he thought as he held the ancient musket in hand and turned...

From my cold dead hands,”...Charlton Heston The next time you look at the American Flag waving proud and free over at the courthouse, or perhaps the short time it takes to put your hand over your heart at a sporting event, you may very well ask yourself this question. How did this all come about, and what lets it endure? We know about the history of how the Pilgrims broke away from religious persecution to colonize a New World, and there the motivation lies. The founding fathers drew up the plans for a new nation under the pretence of freedom...

When Virginia collector Tom Harman was tracing the history of an old Civil War musket, he found that when an old homestead stays in a family for generations, it can yield a wealth of history.Harman of Dugspur, Virginia, a retired U.S. National Park Service police officer, first saw the firearm in early 1998. It was on display at a small Civil War museum in Newbern, Virginia. He considered it museum property and thus unavailable.Harman's first stroke of luck came when he learned that the museum was only borrowing the gun. He got in touch with its owner, made an offer,...
