  • Louisiana Cops Search, Seize Games Based on Thompson's Input

Jack Thompson occasionally seeks to interject his video game theories into criminal investigations of youth violence. Sometimes he succeeds, as in a Louisiana homicide investigation currently being conducted by the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office (WFPSO). West Feliciana Parish is a largely unincorporated area of central Louisiana.... According to Thompson, published reports that the 16-year-old confessed to police that he and the other boy killed Gore because the victim would not let him borrow his car followed "the same scenario in Grand Theft Auto." An autopsy showed that Gore had been shot in the face and beaten. "Nobody shoots anybody...

The sewer-mouth by the name of Howard Stern once denounced Jack Thompson as a "lunatic lawyer" for getting him kicked off radio stations. Considering the source, this is why this statement is featured as a badge of honor on the cover of Thompson's book, Out of Harm's Way, about the dangers posed by what passes for "entertainment" on television, radio and video games. The book not only describes how Thompson has waged a valiant legal war on those who pollute our culture, it offers evidence of direct harm caused by what children see, read and hear. SNIP To the disgrace...

A proposed ban on the sale or rental of violent games to minors is another step closer to passing the Louisiana legislature this week, as The Shreveport Times is reporting that HB1381 has been approved by the Senate Judiciary A Committee and will now go to the Senate for final debate. According to the report, representative Roy Burrell, the Democrat who authored the bill with the help of Miami attorney Jack Thompson, showed the committee a sampling of gameplay from the Grand Theft Auto series. In the clips, the player fought with police officers and attacked a woman with a...

Controversial attorney thrown off of GTA lawsuit November 21, 2005 - Controversial Miami-based attorney Jack Thompson has been removed from a lawsuit filed by the families of two slain police officers and a police dispatcher against Sony, Rockstar Games, and game retailers. Furthermore, the judge in the case revoked Thompson's license to practice law in the state of Alabama citing Thompson's behavior as the cause of the sanction. In our previous coverage of the trial, we reported that Thompson had voluntarily withdrawn from the case because he felt that the "other side [meaning the trial defendents] wants to make me...
  • Jack Thompson vs. Amazon.com? (Threatens to sue over users posting bad book reviews)

Jack Thompson has a new book. Maybe you heard... Out of Harm's Way is currently available on Amazon.com as well as other booksellers. GP can't comment on the tome's quality, since our copy hasn't yet arrived. It is pretty clear, however, that the book's early days have been plagued by bad Amazon reviews. It's possible - likely? - that many of the "reviewers" are reviewing the author, not his work. Most of the reviews have been of the one-star (out of five) variety, accompanied by negative, even nasty commentary about Thompson himself. Out of Harm's Way has likewise been plagued...
  • Thompson: Alabama Suit will Make O.J. Trial Look Like Quilting Bee

GP has never seen an attorney put out a press release hyping the opening day of a lawsuit before, but we've just received one from Jack Thompson. It is a quite remarkable document in many ways, and reads in part: "This Thursday, November 3, 2005, at 1 pm the Alabama fireworks ignite in the Fayette County Courthouse. This may make the OJ Simpson trials look like quilting bees." "Defendants Sony, Take-Two/Rockstar, Wal-Mart, GameStop, and cop killer Devin Moore have all been sued for their respective roles in the June 2003 murder of two police officers and a dispatcher. The corporate...
