<p>As state voters prepare to be subjected to the longest California gubernatorial campaign ever, they can be certain of one thing, say those seasoned in state politics - it'll be nasty.</p>
<p>If history is any guide, victory will go to the candidate who best uses costly statewide television attack ads against his opponent. Don't be surprised if you start seeing them today.</p>

A group is phoning California Republicans with the message that Bill Simon supports Willie Brown. My wife just received this call: "I'm calling from the Republican Party." "Are you pro-life or pro-choice?" "Pro-life" she answered. "Did you know that Bill Simon supported Willie Brown?" And then they hung up. Anybody got a lead on this?

I can't believe I am the first to post this as an article! Radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt declared that he had only one criteria for his vote for governor of CA--who would be able to beat Davis. With great fanfare on today's show, he declared that he is casting his vote for Bill Simon! He punched his chad right there on the show as we listened! Go Simon! Go Hugh!

Dear Friend and Supporter, History is in the making. Tomorrow, Tuesday March 5th, Republican voters will go to the polls to decide who will be the nominee to take on Gray Davis this November. I encourage you to be there too. The 2002 California Gubernatorial election is going down in history as one of the most exciting, unexpected and energizing elections since Ronald Reagan won his first campaign for governor in 1966. The political pundits have been surprised by our recent climb in the polls. We are not surprised. We know why. Values win elections. Our campaign has been about ...

In December 2000, the Los Angeles Times asked California's chief energy regulator, Loretta Lynch, why the state was preventing utilities from locking in predictable prices for power. "You can't just allow any contract," she explained. Spot prices for power might drop, the California Public Utility Commission reasoned, and then fixed-price contracts would mean higher prices for consumers. One company, PG&E, ended up filing for bankruptcy after spot power prices increased for months on end. With PG&E bankrupt and other utilities too broke to buy power last winter, the state stepped in to become the main purchaser of electricity for ...

Dennis Prager, nationally syndicated radio host, is explaining right now why we should vote for Bill Simon. He said the last time the democrats attacked the moderate in hopes that the conservative Republican would win, it backfired in their face. Case in point: Ronald Reagan.

<p>A radio talk show caller named "Dan" had a suggestion last Wednesday morning for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon.</p>
<p>Political rival Richard Riordan, responding to the revelation that Simon had registered in New York as an independent -- not a Republican -- told reporters Tuesday that the shirt he was wearing "has been a Republican longer than Bill Simon."</p>

<p>Republicans in California are upbeat as they watch the political equivalent of the perfect storm brewing this fall for Gov. Gray Davis, the incumbent Democrat.</p>
<p>Republicans, who lost the governorship to Mr. Davis four years ago and the state to Al Gore by 15 percentage points in 2000, need a big win. Many are beginning to think Bill Simon will be able to deliver for them in November if he wins tomorrow's Republican primary.</p>

A very Californian thing has happened in the election campaign for governor of California. Former Mayor Richard Riordan of Los Angeles, the early favorite to win the Republican nomination, looks as if he might be upset in the primary election on Tuesday by an inexperienced conservative who is believed to have little chance of winning in November. Some describe the election as a test of whether Republican moderates can succeed in California politics, as well as a test of whether President Bush made the right choice in deciding to promote Mr. Riordan's candidacy. Actually it is a test of whether ...

March 3, 2002 Political Neophyte Closes Gap in California Governor's Race By JAMES STERNGOLD OS ANGELES, March 2 — The Republican primary for governor is not until Tuesday, but Bruce Cain, a political scientist at the University of California at Berkeley, speaks for many here by saying he has already placed this remarkable campaign in his political hall of fame. Contrary to all expectations just a few weeks ago, Bill Simon Jr., a first- time candidate, a businessman and a solid conservative, has closed a polling gap of more than 30 points against Richard J. Riordan, the former mayor ...

<p>In the political wars, the public watches the candidates, and rightly so. Hidden from view, though, another battle is waged: the struggle between the candidates' political consultants for the hearts and minds of voters.</p>
<p>The victor determines the election. People cast votes, but consultants convince them whom to vote for.</p>

<p>On a crisp January day, Gray Davis invited his top political strategists to his suburban Sacramento home to preview a series of ads targeting his main Republican rival, a moderate who posed an ominous threat to the Democratic governor's re-election hopes.</p>

Hey freeper boys and girls, it's that time again-- PRIMARY ELECTION TIME! As of the time of this writing, most states have their primaries mere weeks or even DAYS (hello, California) away. With the Senate in the balance, the House in need of stronger conservatives, and the nation's governships being overrun with liberal Democrats in conservative states (hi, Dixieland and rural Midwest), this election is CRITICAL. Even moreso in the primary to prevent RINOs beforehand. It is the mission of FreeRepublic to elect conservative candidates at federal, state, and local levels. We may disagree on some things, but we ...

Possibility of upset in governor's race looms Once-humdrum GOP contest now a battle One of the most wildly unpredictable, even bizarre, political campaigns California has seen hurtles toward Election Day with the real possibility of an upset in the governor's race that would have been unimaginable a few weeks ago. As the new year dawned, it seemed that a long general election campaign between Gov. Gray Davis, a Democrat, and Republican Richard Riordan, the former mayor of Los Angeles, had already begun. Riordan, his focus fixed on November, was already running television commercials condemning Davis for "gross mismanagement" of ...

OAKLAND -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon's next-to-last local stop was supposed to be a gracious thank you to supporters in a small, sun-dappled park behind Oakland International Airport. But instead, the brief campaign stop turned into a symbol of an increasingly nasty primary race between two one-time friends. Supporters of Simon and fellow candidate Richard Riordan, who was also in the Bay Area on Saturday, spent much of the campaign stop in a verbal parking-lot scuffle, trading insults after a handful of Riordan supporters showed up, uninvited, to the event. Each argued their candidate stands a better chance of ...
