Note that in one of those red counties that went for Jones, Mariposa County Bill Simon is only behind by one vote. He will win that one after the absentees are all processed in the next couple of days.

Yippee! And the media were sooooo surprised! And yes, it DOES matter in a state carried by ALGORE by double digits. Grayout Davis is vulnerable. I keep hearing the media reporting Davis as a "popular govenor". Oh, really? Then why does a recent poll show Simon ahead of Davis right now by 2% (yeah, I know, 8 months is a long time). But a previous poll showed Jones and Davis neck and neck - this with Jones spending nearly ZERO dollars on television advertising, and Davis spending millions. There's a clue...

As long as Algore's people don't try to count them.

Did you hear Jones' remarks about Simon?
They were about as ungracious as any I've heard from DemocRATS...

maybe... just maybe... Californians are waking up. Late risers, but... we can hope. *sigh*
To: Poohbah
maybe that's what woke ppl up?

I hope that ALL of Riordan's and Jones' voters rally behind Simon. Mr. Riordan says it's time to make the Republican party more inclusive -- that's right, Mr. Riordan, and you should step up to the plate to help do that.
To: Poohbah
Does anyone have a link to a general overview of the candidates etc.? I have been confused on the big stink about the NRA's backing of whoever and can't figure out what's exactly going on.
To: ElkGroveDan
Sweeeeeeeeet. And Dickie Riordan couldn't even get 50% in his home county where he was a "popular mayor." LOL!
To: ElkGroveDan
I give up: Who's 'Edie Bukewighe'?
Question number two: How many voted for ol' "Lack of" Grey Davis?

As you can see by the map, his support is confined to a small area -- his home County and vicinity. He should get behind the winner in this race. He ran a lousy campaign and he has only himself to blame.

Great win for Simon.... Now the question is can he unite the 50.6% of the party that didn't vote for him and then bring in enough moderates and indies to defeat Davis. I hope so and maybe the national GOP will get behind him and move this to a victory in Nov.

He introduced Simon at the victory party and was very gracious. He then proceeded to say that the most important issue is getting rid of Gray Davis. Sounded like he had already put any hurt feelings behind himself.

I don't have a link handy with a general overview, but I can summarize the NRA endorsement thing. Jones supported McCain in the Primaries in 2000, so the Bush camp pretty much shut him out, assuring that he wouldn't get any campaign money for his campaign for governor. The polls showed that Jones was running third, without much of chance of winning. Riordan got an F from the NRA, Jones an A+. Simon was given an A, but the NRA endorsed Jones anyway, in spite of the polling that shoed that Jones wasn't going to win. Some of the NRA's member councils "broke away" from the NRA official endorsement, and endorsed Simon. How very independent of them!!
