In the political wars, the public watches the candidates, and rightly so. Hidden from view, though, another battle is waged: the struggle between the candidates' political consultants for the hearts and minds of voters.

The victor determines the election. People cast votes, but consultants convince them whom to vote for.

South didn't impress me at all with his inaccurate predictions and ridiculous assertions during the power shortages a year ago.

I assume he also predicted that Davis would wisely spend his money weakening Riordan in the primary. He never predicted that it would actually help Simon win.

He'll claim otherwise this Wednesday, of course.

This is the first I've read of Russo. Sounds like someone I'd like on my team.

""South, 50, a lanky Montana-born political junkie with a 1970s shag haircut and a passion for California politics, is Gov. Gray Davis' top political adviser. It was South who was credited, rightly, with one of California's most dramatic election turnarounds: Davis' 1998 primary victory over multimillionaires Al Checchi and Rep. Jane Harman, and then Davis' near-flawless general-election victory over Republican Dan Lungren. ""

I could have "engineered" a victory over Lundgren after having consumed 106 beers(even if I passed out)!!LOL
