SCOTUS has,for the second time in several years, struck down Massachusetts politicians who chose to violate basic Constitutional rights. Both times they did so by a 9-0 vote. This time it was a 1st Amendment case (religious rights *and* free speech rights) and involved the City of Boston. It's the lead story today on local Boston news stations. The earlier one was a 2nd Amendment case in which SCOTUS called the Massachusetts law that they struck down as "frivolous" (Caetano v Massachusetts). Shurtleff v City of Boston

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a program of the city of Boston that allows outside groups to fly flags at city hall must permit the flying of flag with a cross that a camp referred to as a "Christian flag." The question before the court was whether flying the flag as part of a government program was considered government speech if the flag belonged to a private organization, in this case, Camp Constitution. The Supreme Court ruled that it is not. "We conclude that, on balance, Boston did not make the raising and flying of private groups’ flags a...

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Monday that the city of Boston violated the Constitution when it refused to let a local organization fly a Christian flag in front of city hall. While the case had religious overtones, the decision was fundamentally about free speech rights. The court said the city created a public forum, open to call comers, when it allowed organizations to use a flagpole in front of City Hall for commemorative events. Denying the same treatment for the Christian flag was a violation of free expression, the court said. The ruling was a victory for a group...

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled today that the city of Boston, Massachusetts wrongly banned Christian flags from a community flag program. Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver presented oral argument in January to the U.S. Supreme Court in Shurtleff v. City of Boston, arguing that the City of Boston violated the Constitution by censoring a Christian flag in a public forum open to “all applicants” merely because the application referred to it as a “Christian flag.” There are three flagpoles outside City Hall that fly the U.S., Massachusetts and Boston flags, plus a fourth flag on Congress Street, which...

Last week, Western Hills High School teacher Kristopher Franks retaliated against high school freshman and honors student Dakota Ary after he was overheard telling one other student that he believes homosexuality is wrong because of his Christian faith.
