Five-term Congressman Jim Matheson has announced that he'll relinquish his Congressional seat following the 2014 midterm elections, likely paving the way for a GOP pick-up. The Utah Democrat made his decision public via his Facebook page: When I launched my first campaign in 1999, I knew that the arc of my public service would have many chapters. It has been a tremendous privilege to serve the people of Utah during my time in the United States House of Representatives, but my time in the House should not be the sum total of my service. Today, I am announcing that I...

This morning, two Democrats in the House of Representatives stood with Republicans and voted to defund ObamaCare. This officially makes it a bi-partisan effort to put an end to a partisan bill. A horrible, partisan Democratic bill that Americans did not, and do not, want. Via Lucianne, The Daily Caller reports, Two Democratic members of the House voted with Republicans Friday to defund Obamacare and fund the government until the end of the year: Utah Rep. Jim Matheson and North Carolina Rep. Mike McIntyre. Matheson is the sole Democratic member of the Utah delegation, a state that Republican presidential candidate...

Holding to form, Rep. Jim Matheson, D-Utah, announced Saturday that he would oppose his party's health reform bill, just like he did when the House version came up for a vote late last year. Matheson, a conservative Democrat and leader of the Blue Dog caucus, said he is convinced the massive $940 billion bill would "leave our nation worse off." "I am saddened that the year-long debate on health reform has resulted in legislation that is too expensive, contains too many special deals, does not contain health care costs and will result in increases in health insurance premiums and therefore...

Congressional Representative Michele Bachmann’s appearance on CNN’s Larry King live a few days ago has sent the Denver Examiner’s Keith Vance, not to mention the Obama White House, into a state close to hysteria. Vance is calling Bachmann a liar and accusing her of being part of the conservative smear machine – because she matter-of-factly called for an investigation into President Obama’s attempt to persuade Representative Jim Matheson to change his vote on Obama-care from no to yes. Bachmann’s point is well-taken, in that Obama just nominated Matheson’s brother for a seat on the federal bench. Well, now. Here is...

Democrats are using the nuclear option to try to ram their government takeover of health care through the Senate. The fate of that legislation may come down to a dozen or so members of the House of Representatives opposed to government-funded abortions. Right now, the vote in the House couldn't be more closely divided. The original version of the bill passed the House in November by a narrow 220 to 215 margin. Since then, three Democratic supporters have left Congress through retirement or death. A fourth, Rep. Eric Massa, New York Democrat, is reportedly resigning today because of charges that...

SALT LAKE CITY -- People in Utah's 2nd Congressional District won't be seeing any town hall meetings on health care during the August break. Congressman Jim Matheson's spokeswoman Allison Heyrend said the congressman has opted instead to continue to use a telephone town-meeting approach. She said they've had five such meetings since the first of the year. "We had about 46,000 Utahns participate, and I would say 90 percent of the questions and the discussion was about health care," she said. Heyrend said the call-outs for the telephone meetings were based on voter registrations and involved members of all parties....

Utahns may get the chance to vote for a Romney this November after all — Josh Romney, the son of former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, says he's considering a run for Congress. Of course, there's always the possibility that Mitt Romney may end up on the ballot as a vice presidential candidate — or even, some suggest, the party's nominee if the campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., continues to falter. Josh Romney told the Deseret Morning News that after a year of campaigning across country for his father, he's been approached to run as a Republican against 2nd...
