SEATTLE -- They say misery loves company. But for the Seattle Mariners, misery is theirs alone. You might pardon Seattleites for rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals in their futile attempt to reach the World Series this year. Not because we're fans of Paul Goldschmidt or Yadier Molina, but because they were our last hope to keep the hometown Mariners from a rather dubious distinction. But the hopes died when the Washington Nationals completed their sweep of the Cardinals in the NLCS Tuesday night. The Nationals are World Series bound for the first time in their franchise history, and the...
  • Seattle Mariners' Mitch Haniger suffers ruptured testicle after foul ball to groin

Team manager Scott Servais announced that Haniger was placed on the 10-day injured list after sustaining a serious injury during Thursday’s game against the Houston Astros. He didn’t have a timetable for Haniger's recovery but said he doesn’t “imagine he's going to be doing anything for a couple weeks." The 28-year-old outfielder sustained the unusual injury during the 3rd inning when a fouled fastball from Justin Verlander appeared to strike Haniger directly in the groin. He was seen falling over before struggling to get up, using his bat for help. He remained in the game until the 7th inning.

Lorena Martin was hired just over a year ago to fill a position unique to baseball. No other organization before the Seattle Mariners had a director of high performance in the baseball operations department. But on Monday, just over a month after the Mariners fired her, Lorena Martin posted a string of heavy comments to her Instagram and Twitter accounts, leveling accusations of racism and discrimination and specifically naming general manager Jerry Dipoto, manager Scott Servais and director of player development Andy McKay.
  • Mariners, Rays Swap Miller, Morrison, Farquhar For Karns

    MLB Trade Rumors ^ | 11/5/15 | Jeff Todd
The Mariners and Rays have announced a three-for-three trade that sends infielder/outfielder Brad Miller, first baseman Logan Morrison, and reliever Danny Farquhar from Seattle to Tampa in exchange for righty Nate Karns, lefty C.J. Riefenhauser, and minor league outfielder Boog Powell. With the trade, new Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto has made a striking first major move. The key piece, of course, is the 27-year-old Karns, who put up a solid 147-inning campaign last year, working to a 3.67 ERA with 8.9 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9. He’ll bring ample, cheap control with him to the Mariners, even if he regresses (and/or...
  • Edgar Martinez should be in the baseball Hall of Fame

Edgar Martinez, a seven-time all-star, should be in the baseball Hall of Fame, but support for his candidacy has been waning over the past three seasons. “I’m not surprised that my percentage went down,” Martinez said a year ago. “We just have to wait and see for the future.” The biggest knock on his enshrinement is that he played as the team’s designated hitter and thus had little to no impact on the defensive part of the game. However, he still deserves to be in. For starters, the American League has required a designated hitter ever since the 1973 season,...

Senior pastor Kenton Beshore said the first sermons on the plight of illegal immigrants didn't go over well with many members of his evangelical church, which sits on a 50-acre campus in Orange County and has a 3,400-seat sanctuary, sports facilities, restaurant and a man-made lake. "We took a hit on it," said Mr. Beshore. "We had people who walked out and whose giving went away." It was part of the reason the church ended 2012 with a $500,000 budget shortfall, he said. But much has changed in the two years since—both at Mr. Beshore's 14,000-member Mariners Church and at...

SEATTLE - Kevin Millwood and five Seattle relievers combined on a no-hitter, the third in franchise history, and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 on Friday night. The no-hitter was the fourth in the majors this season, joining gems pitched by the Angels' Jered Weaver, the Mets' Johan Santana and White Sox right-hander Philip Humber, who threw a perfect... *** It's believed to be 10th combined no-hitter in MLB history.

SEATTLE -- For now, the Seattle Mariners believe a proposal to build a new NBA/NHL arena in Seattle needs to find a different home. The Mariners sent a formal letter to the city of Seattle and King County officials Tuesday opposing the idea of a new multipurpose arena in the same neighborhood as the Mariners' home of Safeco Field. The letter, signed by Mariners chairman Howard Lincoln, cited concerns about traffic and scheduling of events taking place in an area that already features Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field -- the home to the Seattle Seahawks and Sounders. In the letter,...

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands - Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman has been stabbed to death and his brother has been arrested as a suspect, according to Dutch police. Rotterdam Police spokeswoman Patricia Wessels says police were called to a home in the Dutch port city early Monday morning and found Halman bleeding from a stab wound. The officers attempted unsuccessfully to resuscitate the 24-year-old major league baseball player. Wessels says the officers arrested Halman's 22-year-old brother. She declined to give his name, in line with Dutch privacy rules. Fox News reports that the brother's name is Jason. Wessels said the brother was...
  • U2 concert pushes Marlins-Mariners series from Miami to Seattle

There goes U2's Bono again, imposing his will on the Major League Baseball schedule. As it attempts a reboot of its canceled 2010 tour, the world's biggest rock 'n' roll band is booting the Seattle Mariners and Florida Marlins from Sun Life Stadium for their interleague series on June 24-26. Instead of home games in Miami Gardens, the Fish will take on Ichiro(notes) at Safeco Field in Seattle using National League rules. This apparently means 84 home games for the M's and 78 for Florida. Uneven! It also could mean that AL Cy Young winner King Felix Hernandez(notes) (pictured holding...
  • Hall of Fame MLB Broadcaster Dies: Dave Niehaus, the consummate pro

Dave Niehaus was smiling the last time I saw him. This was on Oct. 20, after the Mariners had formally introduced new manager Eric Wedge in the interview room at Safeco Field. Since the 1977 inception of the Mariners’ franchise, Niehaus had called more than 5,000 games, while attending not quite as many press conferences. During the announcements of firings, he would stand in the back of the room and look on with a regal expression that would convey gloom, but never doom. The happier occasions would find Niehaus, eyes glowing on high beam, as huggable as a teddy bear....

It isn't just a trade. It's a foray into the history books. How often in life do you ever see a trade like this -- two Cy Youngs in their prime changing teams in, essentially, the same deal? When you get right down to it, it's Roy Halladay for Cliff Lee, with a supporting cast that looks like the roster for the Futures Game. You just don't see trades like this one, ladies and gentlemen. It isn't exactly Wes Littleton for Beau Vaughan, now is it? "I can remember a lot of blockbuster trades, and this is definitely a blockbuster,"...

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Ken Griffey Jr. wouldn't let anyone know of his decision to rejoin Seattle and spurn Atlanta until he called Chuck Armstrong. The Mariners president for the last 24 years had built a strong friendship with "Kenny" and his family from the day in 1987 when Seattle made Griffey its No. 1 overall draft choice. A few years ago Major League Baseball gave Griffey an offseason award. The league told him he could have anyone he wanted flown to baseball's winter meetings and present it to him. Griffey chose Armstrong. And it was Armstrong who kept lobbying Griffey...

Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack? Not in sections 311 and 312 at Safeco Field on Aug. 5 and Sept. 9. Those will be peanut-controlled zones on those days, the Mariners announced this week, cleaned thoroughly the night before and all peanut products will be banned on those games. Peanut products will not be sold at nearby concession stands. Tickets will be $10 each for those days.

SEATTLE (AP) — Most of the time, a kiss is just a kiss in the stands at Seattle Mariners games. The crowd hardly even pays attention when fans smooch. But then last week, a lesbian complained that an usher at Safeco Field asked her to stop kissing her date because it was making another fan uncomfortable. The incident has exploded on local TV, on talk radio and in the blogosphere and has touched off a debate over public displays of affection in generally gay-friendly Seattle. "Certain individuals have not yet caught up. Those people see a gay or lesbian couple...

ABOARD USS CAPE ST. GEORGE (NNS) -- USS Cape. St. George’s (CG 71) boarding team responded to a distress call by a Panamanian-flagged motor vessel while conducting maritime security operations in the North Persian Gulf Feb. 27. The master of Motor Vessel Hader, a diesel tanker, contacted Cape St. George via bridge-to-bridge reporting it had been fired upon and illegally boarded. One of Cape’s two Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) teams boarded the vessel and conducted a security sweep of the ship to verify that it was safe for the master and his 11 crew members to stay aboard....

ABOARD USS GONZALEZ (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), currently deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of maritime security operations (MSO), rescued six Iranian mariners Feb. 28 after they had been adrift for 10 days. Gonzalez’s bridge team first spotted the crippled dhow while conducting MSO in the Central Persian Gulf. Once the destroyer’s watchstanders identified the distressed vessel, the ship immediately changed its course to render assistance. The Iranians explained that their dhow’s engine and rudder failed Feb. 8. “Patrolling warships are sometimes called on for humanitarian interventions,” said Cmdr. Robert D. Randall, the ship’s...
