And the Seattle Mariners are all alone....

SEATTLE -- They say misery loves company. But for the Seattle Mariners, misery is theirs alone.

You might pardon Seattleites for rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals in their futile attempt to reach the World Series this year. Not because we're fans of Paul Goldschmidt or Yadier Molina, but because they were our last hope to keep the hometown Mariners from a rather dubious distinction.

But the hopes died when the Washington Nationals completed their sweep of the Cardinals in the NLCS Tuesday night.

The Nationals are World Series bound for the first time in their franchise history, and the Mariners have lost their final partner in futility.

The Seattle Mariners are now the only team never to make the World Series.

They've come somewhat close three times -- reaching the American League Championship Series in 1995, 2000 and 2001, but falling in six games twice and five games the other time, so they've never even been as close as a game away.

But to reach the World Series, you have to qualify for the playoffs first -- and that hasn't happened for team since that record-breaking 2001 season where they won 116 games. The 18-year playoff drought is currently the longest in professional sports and one year ahead of NFL's Cleveland Browns, which could have an outside chance to end their streak this season.

How about that. Too bad for the team that has won more games in a season than anyone.

Too bad for T-Mobile, the communications company headquartered near Seattle. They signed a 25-year contract last year for the naming rights to the field where the Mariners play...to the tune of 600 million dollars.

A more sorry bunch of absolute losers there have never been....short of the Democrat party.

They ought to just announce tomorrow that they're going out of business and sell all the team's assets. Why? The Seattle Mariners will never, I repeat, NEVER advance to the World Series. EVER. Mark my words. Written in stone.

Within five years, I suspect the Mariners will pack up and move to Vegas.

As a life long Red Sox fan, all I have to say is Boo-frickin-hoo.

I am sure cubbie fans will agree with our sentiment.

Quick, someone contact that “genius” La-Bron James and have him do a news conference on the ignorance of the other teams.

I was just telling co-workers here that this Series will be the first one featuring a Washington DC based team since 1933, when the original Washington Senators franchise (transferred to Minnesota in 1961 and did not play in a Series again until 1965 against Los Angeles) lost to the New York Giants. And that the 1961 to 1971 Senators franchise (before moving to Arlington, Texas in 1972) did not qualify for the playoffs, with it’s best finishing in 1969 in fourth place in the AL East with 86 wins.

This will be the first World Series appearance for the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals franchise as the Expos lost to Los Angeles in the 1981 NLCS and that this season was the franchise’s second appearance in an NLCS.

If the Nationals win the World Series, it will be the first time a DC based team wins one since 1924, when the original Senators beat the New York Giants in seven games. The Senators won only two more AL pennants after 1924 (1925 and 1933). Did not win another Series until 1987 as the Minnesota Twins, with another in 1991 during the Kirby Puckett, Jack Morris, etc era.

They'll have to trip over the Tampa Bay Rays on the way. 96 wins on a $51 million payroll, taking the ALDS into Game Five, and only 13,000 show up each night to watch them in that bunker. What's up with THAT?

Seattle did just fine this year except for pitching, hitting, base-running, and defense. Two great things about being an Mariners fan: it will always be true that two or three years from the present they’ll have a playoff team, and come this year’s playoffs we get to root for whomever we want. I did think it a great idea to expand the AL West to five teams by bringing in the Astros so Seattle would have somebody to beat. That worked out pretty well, didn’t it?

Which became the basis for the famous 1955 musical Damn Yankees. Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets...

Should we talk about that time the Browns were in the Super Bowl?

Or maybe we could fondly remember that last Indians world championship... 1948. Although, few of us are old enough to remember that one.

I am inclined to wish nothing but misfortune upon any team that calls Washington D.C. home.

The team was founded in what 1977?... so it hasn’t made the show in 42
years?

Big Whoop...

Chicago Cubs went 108 years between appearances in the World Series...

42 years isn’t even close to the record of not making it to the world series.

I’d say the Mariners have a far better shot of making the World Series before the Pittsburgh Pirates do....

Once this year's Series begins, Seattle will be the only team which has never played in a World Series...but they will be one of seven teams that have never won a World Series.

Winning a World Series may be a more significant benchmark.

Seriesly.

Imagine Yankee Stadium in White Plains rather than the Bronx, with no public transportation available to get there, and most games beginning at a time that would require driving through 20 miles of rush hour traffic. Put the Rays in Ybor City near Amalie Arena, and the ticket sales will double. It's either that or hello to des Montreal Rayons.

Not much into BBall but have the Mari-losers ever won a Pennant? I don’t think they have. There are more Seahawks stuff around - T’s, car decals, etc than Mariners, hardly see any and if so, real old and worn out.

There is also the NBA Rochester/Cincinnati Royals/Kansas City/Sacramento Kings franchise, whose first and only appearance in an NBA final was in 1951 when still existing as the Rochester Royals, when they defeated the New York Knicks in seven games. The closest that that franchise ever got to another NBA Finals appearance was making the league semi finals in 1981 and 2002.

In the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs have basically kept the mantle of futility for many years with their last appearance (and victory) in a Stanley Cup Final in 1967, this being reinforced by the St. Louis Blues appearing in a Cup final for the first time since 1970 (the famous Bobby Orr winning goal) and winning their first Cup title and becoming the last surviving 1967 NHL expansion club to win a Cup. The Leafs have a partner in all of this with the Winnipeg Jets/Arizona Coyotes franchise that has yet to appear in a Cup final since entering the league as a holdover from the World Hockey Association in 1979. The closest to such a thing was a 2011-12 appearance in the Western Conference final against the eventual champion Los Angeles Kings (the Kings’ first Cup title ironically).

If the Rays played in Pittsburgh you would not have been able to get a ticket all season long. At least their management knows how to do something with limited resources. The people running the Buccos are just pathetic.

Nope. I think they’ve been to the ALCS two or three times, but never won.

And they likely never will.
