"Accidents" and deaths may be inevitable in extreme climate activism that could merit blowing up thousands of pipelines, author and radical climate activist Andreas Malm said in a startling new interview. The "How to Blow Up a Pipeline" writer and activist gave an interview to The New York Times on his upcoming follow-up book, "Overshoot: How the World Surrendered to Climate Breakdown." At the top of the exchange, Malm was questioned on how "it’s hard to think that deaths don’t become inevitable if there is more sabotage" like blowing up pipelines. "Sure, if you have a thousand pipeline explosions per...

On April 4 2014, in Malmö District Court in Sweden, the provocative artist Dan Park was sentenced to three months in jail for hate speech (“hets mot folkgrupp”) for his works of art. The prosecutor even wanted the artist examined for mental illness, similar to the way Communist dictatorships have treated dissidents. The court did not support this suggestion, however. Park and his defense lawyer have indicated that they will appeal the verdict.Ingrid Carlqvist, the editor of the newspaper Dispatch International, commented that the verdict essentially amounts to a ban on satire in Sweden, at least if the satire involves ideologically protected immigrant...

Anti-Semitism and Malmö are words that frequently appear together. Jews are turning their back on the southern city in the wake of several incidents while potential Jewish tourists have expressed concern over the city's safety. The Local's Patrick Reilly donned a kippah for a day to find out what the situation is really like. Last month The Local received an email from a Jewish reader in America who is contemplating a visit to Sweden. "With the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe, and some very scary stuff in Sweden (Malmö comes to mind), why should a Jewish guy visit Sweden with...

A year after claims about an exodus of Jews from Malmö made global headlines, many Jewish residents still don't feel safe in southern Sweden, The Local's Karen Holst discovers. The past couple of years have been turbulent for Malmö's Jewish community. A spike in anti-Semitic attacks in 2009 prompted a number of Jews to leave the city altogether, concluding they would never feel accepted there. Controversial comments by the town's long-serving Social Democratic mayor Ilmar Reepalu also put Malmö in the spotlight, drawing criticism from within his own party, as well as from influential Jewish organisations aboard. And in December...

Police in Malmö now believe that more than a dozen unexplained shootings which have taken place in the city this year may be connected. "We have established a special unit here in Malmoe to investigate between 10 and 15 similar crimes ... They are all shootings with no apparent motive," local police spokesman Lars-Haakan Lindholm told AFP. While the special unit has refused to reveal exactly which cases it is looking into, Lindholm said they had in common that the victims in virtually every case appeared to be of immigrant origin and "we have no explanation for why they were...

Parking attendants in Malmö are to have miniature video cameras attached to their caps as part of a bid to increase the safety of members of a profession often exposed to threats and harassment. Starting this Wednesday, a number of meter maids from municipal firm Parkering Malmö will begin wearing the cap-borne cameras, which can register sound and video and are activated when an inspector pushes a button. The resultant video clips will be saved, and may be used as evidence for incidents that are reported to the police or go to trial. All other clips will be erased. "By...

As the Israeli and Swedish tennis teams faced off against one another in Malmö, Sweden over the weekend, the dull roar of a crowd was audible. ScaniaBoy writes: During the second day of the Davis Cup tie between Sweden and Israel in Malmo, Sweden, a demonstration against the match and against Israel took place. After some 2000 people had listen to speeches (rants) by a former MP from the Green party (a well known anti-semite) and the party leader of the former Communist Party (rebranded the Left PArty), some seven thousand people (much less than the expected 10 - 15 000) marched towards the tennis stadium. Once there a small group of radical "activists" (more appropriate names are easy to find) tried to press pass the...

A Swedish teenager who made oinking noises as he walked past two police officers has been convicted for the insult and ordered pay a fine. “The boy regrets his actions and understands that what he did was wrong,” said the boy’s attorney Clea Sangborn to the Expressen newspaper. “It’s not appropriate to oink at police. Ten people were arrested in connection with a pro-Israel demonstration in Malmö on Sunday. The city's main square was closed as the demo met with anti-Israel protesters. Around 50 anti-Israel protesters had gathered but they were kept apart from the main demonstration, in front of the city hall on Stortorget, by a police barrier. The protesters were practically encircled by police but still managed to set off a number of bangers which disturbed the otherwise peaceful demonstration. Demonstrators displayed a sense of humour with several banners expressing comments on recent events concerning racism and racist stereotyping of some Malmö's residents...

While self confident debaters, politicians and other sorts of experts argue over which country in the world actually is the best example of a guiding light to humanity there ever was (GWB would say it is the US of today, Obama would claim it's the UN, while a proud European like my fellow countryman Hans Blix probably would say it is Saddam Hussein), evidence of the rapid decline of Western civilization is everywhere. Yes, there are still parts of the West that function very well and where most people are well educated and well off, but for how long? An...

Malmö’s famous Turning Torso skyscraper is among the tallest housing blocks in Europe. Behind the ultra-modern exterior is one of the world's most luxurious apartment complexes, writes Paul Steele. People in the south of Sweden are total sceptics to new projects until they’re finished. The Öresund Bridge – no one will ever use it. The City Tunnel – complete waste of money. Turning Torso – Ha! Who would ever want to live there? I for one, and probably half of south Sweden and greater Copenhagen for another. One of the tallest accommodation blocks in Europe, Turning Torso is the leading...
