One Confederate monument is gone and another is slated to be taken down at Forest Hill Cemetery after Madison Mayor Paul Soglin ordered their removal. Soglin said in a statement Thursday that he directed city staff to remove a plaque and a larger stone monument at the Confederate Rest section of the public cemetery, saying, “There should be no place in our country for bigotry, hatred or violence against those who seek to unite our communities and our country.”

Leftist mayor Madison Paul Soglin announced today that he will have the informational monument at the city’s Confederate Rest cemetery removed, the northern-most Confederate cemetery in the country. The cemetery holds the remains of southern soldiers who died while imprisoned at civil war Camp Randall, the current site of the Wisconsin Badger football stadium. The cemetery is respectfully tended and maintained, and services are held with graves decorated on Memorial Day. The plaque to be removed explains the origin of the cemetery and who lies buried there.

The Center for Cultural Enrichment (CCE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is warning students that if your Halloween costume is funny, it's more than likely that you're exploiting oppressed people. That message, along with other suggestions about avoiding "cultural appropriation," was posted on fliers around campus in the previous few days. The Madison City Council overrode Mayor Paul Soglin’s veto Tuesday evening, adding homelessness as a protected class under its Equal Opportunities Ordinance. The change adds homelessness to classifications like age, disability, arrest record, sexual orientation, political beliefs and others, providing limited protection against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations. Thousands of President Obama supporters turned out in in Madison, Wisc., for a rally following Wednesday night’s debate in Denver. The mood was somber, to say the least, as they waited to enter Bascom Mall at the University of Wisconsin Thursday afternoon. University of Wisconsin students and fellow Wisconsinites had mixed reviews on the president's performance. I talked to supporters of the president who had watched the debate, asking how they thought the president did. With lawmakers gearing up for a vote on the state budget, a “Walkerville” camp similar to the one that sprang up during the protests at the state Capitol earlier this year may be returning this weekend — this time to the terraces of Mifflin and Carroll streets. We Are Wisconsin, an alliance of community groups, labor unions and others, has asked the city for a permit to set up the camp across from the Capitol to provide information about Gov. Scott Walker’s budget proposals and efforts to recall Republican legislators who voted to eliminate bargaining rights for most public employees.

The rally is taking place in Madison on April 16th, at the Capitol from 12pm-3pm. Americans for Prosperity says that there will be busses. If you are from out of state and are in the Midwest, please make plans to come to Madison for this rally if you can. Wisconsin is where the fight for 2012 starts.

Yesterday we noted the details of a bill introduced by Wisconsin's new Tea Party Republican Governor Scott Walker that would increase payments from public sector employees while eliminating collective bargaining powers for unions (including teachers)—while also introducing unprecedented executive powers to terminate state employees with little due process. In passing, Walker mentioned plans to call in the National Guard, if necessary. MADISON (WKOW) -- President Obama said Democrats are not just going to win the election, we are going to bring back the American dream. President Obama told the thousands of students he needs them fired up to vote. UW Police estimated 26,500 people attended the President's address. Library Mall had approximately 17,200 people, the rest of the people were on Bascom Hill and in front of Science Hall, East Campus Mall and a portion of State Street Mall. UW Police say prior to the gates opening, people formed a line that stretched for 1.1 miles waiting to enter the event.

So, Obama came to Madison this evening. He was lying through his teeth, saying that Republicans were going to cut student financial aid, send jobs overseas, and increase taxes on the middle class. I was seated on Bascom Hill, so I was not in the rally. I held up a Walker for Governor sign and was called an idiot and a nazi for doing so by some older woman (likely a professor or faculty member). What was distrubing was the lack of UW-Madison College Republican support.
