The baby was cold but otherwise believed to be in good condition. She was covered only with a blanket. A newborn baby girl, estimated to be less than 10 hours old, was discovered by a newspaper carrier along the highway in Madera County early Monday morning, according to the Fresno Bee.

Five inmates are on the loose after escaping from a California jail. The inmates broke out of the Madera County Jail, the Madera County Police Department reported Saturday on its Facebook page. “They are all gang members and considered armed and dangerous,” the report said.

"The mother of a boy found eating out of a garbage can in a Madera park was arrested today on suspicion of two counts of felony child abandonment. Jessica Zarate, 21, of Madera had contacted police about 5 p.m. Monday after media reports about her son. She told police her son had been kidnapped. She then was released."
