“Trade Compliance” is a subset of regulatory compliance, focused primarily on export controls and the Customs rules concerning importing and duty assessment. Outside of the occasional discovery of illegal Chinese copies of branded gym shoes, or the even rarer news story about a company caught selling technology to the Iranians or North Koreans, this specialty rarely makes the mainstream news. An exception occurred as April, 2024 came to an end: the Federal Trade Commission announced a record fine against an American retail chain, Williams-Sonoma, and its subsidiaries (including Rejuvenation, Goldtouch, and the Pottery Barn family), for violations of the FTC’s...

Stanley Black & Decker acquired the Craftsman brand in 2017 to revitalize it and bring manufacturing back to the United States. The Fort Worth factory, announced in 2019, was meant to take this vision further by forging iconic Craftsman wrenches, ratchets, and sockets from American steel. The company believed that advanced automation would allow the plant to compete cost-effectively with imported products while meeting consumer demand for U.S.-made tools. Former employees revealed that the factory’s automated system experienced critical problems that couldn’t be resolved before the company closed the facility. The pandemic also disrupted the production timeline, preventing proper testing...

I have been trying very hard to buy American, and/or to avoid buying goods made in China. I need to buy several new power tools (e.g. circular saw, reciprocating saw, miter saw), and it seems impossible to NOT buy products made in China. Sorry for the vanity, but it is the Fourth of July, and buying American is important. Suggestions?

A SCIENTIST from Netflix documentary series Pandemic says his team has discovered a potential coronavirus cure. The COVID 19 infected at least 800,000 and killed nearly 39,000 globally. The bioengineer Dr. Jacob Glanville said his California-based team has been working around the clock trying to come up with a drug to beat Covid-19. And yesterday he announced they might just have found one. CBS8 in San Diego reported: A California scientist and his team say they have found a potential...

House Republicans are growing increasingly alarmed that some of their most vulnerable members aren’t doing the necessary legwork to protect themselves from an emerging Democratic tidal wave. In some of the biggest media markets, where blockbuster fundraising is a prerequisite for political survival—most notably in New York City, Los Angeles, and Houston—Republican lawmakers aren’t raising enough money to run aggressive campaigns against up-and-coming Democrats. Of the 53 House Republicans facing competitive races, according to Cook Political Report ratings, a whopping 21 have been outraised by at least one Democratic opponent in the just-completed fundraising quarter. That’s a stunningly high number...

Click on link to see the companies with products made in the USA. I have been buying New Balance tennis shoes for years because I understood they may be the only ones to make tennis shoes here. Then I read that they also manufacture overseas. Who knows the story?

Is anything made in the USA anymore? I'm looking for a coffee press. Requirements: 10 cup minimumStainless Steel or GlassDouble Walled - to keep the coffee hotMADE IN USA - NOT China! I've been searching all over Amazon/Google/Elsewhere, and I'm not finding anything that matches the above requirements. Plenty match on items 1, 2, and 3, but nothing on number 4. I'm astounded that there is literally nothing out there. Lots of folks make these, and some are pretty darned expensive, but when you look at the fine print, or dig through the comments, they ALL end up being sourced...

Ever since his Cheers days John Ratzenberger has been giving speeches and even had his own TV series about American manufacturers. For years he was practically the only guy speaking about bringing manufacturing back. Here is an interview about the election and what it will take to bring back manufacturing.

The California bullet train agency has begun a legal effort to import a significant amount of foreign equipment for its future Los Angeles-to-San Francisco system, a move that could prove politically controversial. The Federal Railroad Administration disclosed last week that the state’s High-Speed Rail Authority was seeking exemptions from the Buy American Act on more than a dozen critical train parts including motors, gearboxes, axles, wheels, brakes, derailment mitigation devices, undercarriages and even the entire aluminum car body shells.

President Barack Obama it putting in a few good words for the “spirit of innovation” that he says turns ideas into jobs and growth. He commented Monday before setting out on a tour of the Hannover Messe, the world’s largest industrial technology trade show, taking place in Hannover, Germany. The U.S. is sponsoring this year’s show and Obama says it’s another chance to urge people to buy “Made in America.” …

In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight.’ MarketWatch photo illustration/Ideal Conceal, Everett Collection Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just... carrying an iPhone? The Ideal Conceal handgun has made waves for what its maker calls an “ingenious” design that looks exactly like a smartphone when in the “locked” position. Ideal Conceal says on its website that, indeed, hardly anybody will notice it: “Smartphones are EVERYWHERE, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides...

The Federal Trade Commission is cracking down on the company issuing “Made in USA” certification seals, alleging that the company is letting partners use the seal without checking that the products were in fact made in the United States. […] “The guidelines say it has to be virtually, entirely made in the USA,” (former prosecutor Jonna Spilbor) said. “And yes, it’s hard. But don’t make money from selling the license if you can’t get enough people to comply with it.” …

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently announced that four Chinese poultry processors have permission to begin shipping meat to the U.S. The nightmare for U.S. consumers? The Chinese-processed chicken will be labeled as ‘made in America!’ Even though the Chinese poultry processors are only allowed to ship cooked meat from U.S.-raised chickens, many in the United States are alarmed that our leaders would allow such a deal to go down in the first place. After all, China is notorious for its food safety problems. Concerns among the public are warranted when you consider that the CDC estimates 325,000 Americans...

I've received my Lotus Solstice-15 with upgraded 1080p display. These are built in the USA by a small company in Orlanda called LotusPC. I negotiated a fair deal and received one-on-one help from the owner of the company. He built the machine to our exact specifications, including the absence of an installed OS (for which we were not charged). This PC is of high-quality, on the order of a Panasonic laptop, in the $800-$1000 range. It's extremely solidly built with keypresses not moving the adjacent keys, has a keypad, and even the base i5 CPU screams. Running Ubuntu 12.10.

TORONTO - The Canadian Auto Workers union said negotiating with the big three automakers - General Motors, Chrysler and Ford - before Monday's midnight strike deadline is like juggling "a lot of balls up in the air." If the CAW, which represents 21,500 members in the three companies, doesn't reach a settlement with the big three, it could mean a walkout could start at 12:01 a.m. Monday. "It's a little tough to tell at this point in time what the impact will be because it depends upon status of bargaining with each of the three companies," CAW secretary treasurer Peter Kennedy said...
