Randy and Ronnell Vorick thought La Habra was about as far away as one could get from terrorism. They were wrong. For the last 2 1/2 weeks, the lives of the couple and their three children have been plunged into an unsettling routine of drivers shouting profanities, stopping to photograph their house and — most recently — spray-painting a slogan on their property. ADVERTISEMENT Their house, a suburban fixer-upper the Voricks bought three years ago, was wrongly identified in a cable news broadcast as the home of a terrorist. "I'm scared to go to work and leave my kids home....

Swell of patriotism La Habra -- came under the national spotlight last week, when this newspaper reported antiwar demonstrators had destroyed a memorial to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the East Coast. Vandals destroyed 87 American flags, destroying red-white-and-blue stepping stones created by neighborhood children and replacing patriotic signs with antiwar slogans. The story was picked up on the Drudge Report, muck-raking journalist Matt Drudge's Internet Web site, and quickly went global. As the week ended, the fence had become a rallying point of patriotism, drawing people from all over Southern California who heard about...

It wasn’t always this way. Not so long ago, the conventional thinking was that folks who were kind to others, received kindness to themselves in return. Parents throughout the Western world taught their kids the simple and comforting belief that people all over the world were the same. “Treat others the way you want to be treated yourself,” was thought to be a universal truism. The concept was based on the notion that everyone reacts equally to kindness. Even now, many “progressives,” still preach that doctrine. LA HABRA -- Antiwar protesters burned and ripped up flags, flowers and patriotic signs at a Sept. 11 memorial that residents erected on a fence along Whittier Boulevard days after the terrorist attacks in 2001 and have maintained ever since. However, although officers witnessed the vandalism Saturday afternoon, police did not arrest three people seen damaging the display because they were "exercising the same freedom of speech that the people who put up the flags were,' La Habra Police Capt. John Rees said Monday. "For this to be vandalism, there had to be an ill-will intent,' he said.
