A German man who used a homemade bomb to attack a mosque in the eastern city of Dresden was Friday sentenced to nearly 10 years in jail for what prosecutors called a xenophobic crime. The bomb damaged the door of the Fatih mosque while the family were inside on September 26th, 2016. That same evening, the accused planted another homemade pipe bomb that slightly damaged a convention center in the city, which was days away from hosting festivities...

Illinois state Sen. Dave Koehler, who abruptly exited the Democratic primary in the 17th Congressional District race two weeks ago, shed some light Thursday on his surprising decision. He said he dropped out the same day U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told him he was going to endorse rival Cheri Bustos. Koehler’s exit came on a Friday, just three days before the filing deadline for state legislative races. Over that weekend, he and supporters had to scramble to get enough signatures to get on the ballot to run for re-election to his state Senate seat. At the time, Koehler said...

Köhler under fire for 'economic war' remarks Published: 27 May 10 16:34 CET German President Horst Köhler sparked a political storm on Thursday by suggesting Germany’s military involvement in Afghanistan was partly motivated by its economic interests rather than solely to guarantee its security. In an interview he gave during his recent visit to the strife-torn country, Köhler appeared to say that the public debate about the war in Afghanistan was gradually facing up to the fact that protecting foreign trade was a legitimate reason for military action. The remarks from Saturday to broadcaster Deutschlandradio, which have just now been...

BERLIN -- Germany chooses its president Saturday, a contest for a mainly ceremonial post that could help Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of September's general election. The ballot pits incumbent President Horst Köhler, a conservative ally of Ms. Merkel, against Social Democrat challenger Gesine Schwan, a left-leaning intellectual, and will be settled by 1,224 delegates from Germany's national parliament and its 16 states. Although ordinary German voters can't take part, presidential elections are often a sign of which way the political wind is blowing in the European Union's most populous nation. Mr. Köhler, a former head of the International Monetary Fund,...

New Setback in German-Polish Ties German President Horst Köhler has angered the Polish government by giving a speech to a group respresenting Germans expelled from Poland after World War II. But German commentators have rushed to Köhler's defense, saying Poland's Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski was wrong to condemn a speech urging expellees to respect Polish concerns. German President Horst Köhler has provoked the ire of Poland's Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski for addressing a gathering of 1,000 Germans expelled from Poland after World War II. In his speech Köhler urged Germans to be sensitive to Polish concerns about plans by the...

BERLIN - Germany's new president, Horst Koehler, begins his first official trip since taking office with a visit to Poland on Thursday - a break with post-war tradition which has mandated the head of state first travel to France. The move has delighted Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski. "This is a sign of how close our relations have become," said the Polish leader in an interview with Germany's Tagesspiegel newspaper. President Koehler - whose office is mainly ceremonial - was born in Poland in 1943 in the village of Skierbieszow. His family was forced to flee at the end of World...

BERLIN (Reuters) - Former IMF head Horst Koehler has been elected Germany's ninth post-war president by a special federal assembly in a poll overshadowed by the inclusion of a Nazi-era judge who sentenced World War Two deserters to death. Koehler, who quit as managing director of the International Monetary Fund to run for the largely ceremonial office, won an absolute majority on Sunday with 604 votes in the 1,204-member assembly. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's candidate Gesine Schwan, who gained 589 votes, was defeated in what opposition conservatives hope will be a harbinger for the ousting of the SPD-Greens government in a...
