In response to Gov. Gray Davis' signing of the bill, state Sen. Pete Knight, R-Palmdale, filed a lawsuit in Sacramento County Superior Court to stop the implementation of the new law providing most marriage rights to domestic partners. Knight cited Proposition 22, the ballot initiative voters approved in 2000 confirming that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in the state of California," as the basis for the lawsuit.
