YEREVAN, Armenia -- An Armenian archaeologist says that scientists have discovered a skirt that could be 5,900-year-old. Pavel Avetisian, the head of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography in Yerevan, said a fragment of skirt made of reed was found during recent digging in the Areni-1 cave in southeastern Armenia. Avetisian told Tuesday's news conference in the Armenian capital that the find could be one of the world's oldest piece of reed clothing. Earlier excavation in the same location has produced what researchers believe is a 5,500-year-old shoe, making it the oldest piece of leather footwear known to researchers. Boris...

The undercover British officer crept silently through the bushes, his tartan kilt a bizarre form of dress for a man who did not want to be conspicuous. Then he stopped to take in the awesome might of the enemy. Through the gloom, he could make out the 15,000 battle-scarred men and 200 machines of the cruellest and most feared of all the SS forces in war-torn France in the summer of 1944. Parked up for the night, their tanks, half-tracks and heavy guns stretched as far as his eyes could see. How could he and the tiny band of amateurish...

Molten metal and a black Workman's Ray Bowen - Blacksmith and Utilikiltarian - was interviewed in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about his life as a kilted blacksmith, "Kilt gives blacksmith memorable edge". It is a cool Q&A article with a cool guy. Unfortunately, the AJC is not cool. I tried to get permission to reprint the article here for your reading pleasure, but the AJC wants 500 smackeroos for it!! After a fairly snotty email on Feb 7th, Joni Zeccola in the News Research department sent me another email that was more carefully worded: We do not allow use such as...

While I was checking out www.pittsburghkilts.com and it's latest photo gallery I came across this pic. and this... In the byline to the pics it mentioned "Baghdad Jay" is on a second tour in Iraq, and wears his two-tone (Khaki with Desert MARPAT) kilt only when off duty. (His M-4 rifle, he points out, goes with him on or off duty). Jay keeps a fantastic blog, which is a fascinating and powerful read. If you want to know what it's like to be in Iraq, forget the news channels and read Jay's blog! I checked it out, and thought it...

Jackson school officials apologize for banning kilt attire at a dance, say student can wear kilt to future school dances, events. The Jackson school board apologized Monday night to kilt-wearing high school senior Nathan Warmack, saying the student had every right to wear the Scottish attire to school functions. The board's action, following a half-hour closed session, resolved a controversy that began last November when Warmack wore a kilt to a high school dance. High school principal Rick McClard kicked Warmack out of the dance because he was wearing a kilt and refused to change into a pair of pants....

JACKSON, Mo. - Nathan Warmack wanted to honor his heritage by wearing a Scottish kilt to his high school dance. Then a principal told him to change into a pair of pants. What began with a few yards of tartan has sparked an international debate about freedom, symbols and cultural dress. More than 1,600 people have signed an Internet petition seeking an apology for the high school senior. Scots in the United States are assembling a traditional ensemble they hope the student will wear to the prom, and his family is trying to change the school's dress code policy. ''It's...

German designers are promoting a skirt for male drinkers to wear at the Munich Beer Festival. They say their Oktoberfest Frock is a lot more comfortable than traditional lederhosen. Doreen Anders and Andreas Landinger, from Munich, say they were influenced by the Scottish kilt in creating the drinking-dress which comes in 'short' or 'calf' length. There are no tartan designs but the kilt comes in colours in-keeping with the blue-and-white Bavarian flag and other symbols of the Oktoberfest beer festival. A spokesman for the designers say the skirt "combines softness with comfort" and does not inhibit the wearer like lederhosen,...

Bob Dole pitched Viagra. Al Gore grew a goofy goatee and taught college. So what's Sen. John Kerry to do to shake off his loosing White House bid? Well, the folks at L.L. Bean, Timberland, or Woolrich would probably love to have him pitching their coats. That's because Kerry's campaign fashion trademark, his wheat-colored Timberland barn coat, has caused a spike in sales of the jackets. "It does seem to be getting a big lift," says Woolrich marketing director Tim Joseph. Barn coat sales typically drop off when winter arrives, but not this year. "We are somewhat inclined to attribute...

European bureaucrats were forced to concede yesterday that the kilt is a male garment after an outcry following its classification as women's wear on an EU form. Scots including Sean Connery were outraged when the EU agency Eurostat said Highland dress should be listed as skirts. Forms sent to kilt makers by the statistical agency did not allow them to register the Scottish national dress as men's clothing. Instead, they were told to give the number of kilts they had sold in a space provided for women's skirts. Kilt makers were also warned they faced a £1,000 fine if they...
