A team of elite civil rights attorneys announced they will represent Karmelo Anthony in the appeal of his murder conviction for fatally stabbing fellow high school athlete Austin Metcalf. Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe, veteran appellate attorney Russell Wilson, civil rights lawyer Brooke Cluse from Ben Crump Law, and others have joined forces in an effort to overturn Anthony’s conviction and 35-year prison sentence, CBS News reported. I have not yet read the full trial transcript. But so far, I do know this. Karmelo Anthony was entitled to a jury of his peers. He did not get that. On that ground alone, he is entitled to a new trial. Minorities are not interchangeable. The prosecutor’s reported proffered reasons for striking all black jurors —that they were teachers—appears to be pretext. Anthony needs a new lawyer on appeal and in a new trial. On April 2, 2025, Karmelo Anthony went to Memorial High School looking for a fight. Though he was participating in a track meet, he felt the need to bring a knife in his backpack. Once at the school, he sat in the tent of the opposing team. When confronted by Austin Metcalf, who told him to leave, Anthony reached into his backpack and said, “Touch me and see what happens.” Metcalf then grabbed Anthony in an attempt to forcibly move him out of the tent.
