A team of elite civil rights attorneys announced they will represent Karmelo Anthony in the appeal of his murder conviction for fatally stabbing fellow high school athlete Austin Metcalf.
Texas NAACP President Gary Bledsoe, veteran appellate attorney Russell Wilson, civil rights lawyer Brooke Cluse from Ben Crump Law, and others have joined forces in an effort to overturn Anthony’s conviction and 35-year prison sentence, CBS News reported.
They will conduct an independent review of the trial to determine whether any errors occurred during the trial in their pursuit of an appeal, the lawyers said in their announcement on Monday.
They will be working the case pro bono.
“Our appellate team has been retained following the conviction to conduct a fresh, independent review of the trial record,” the group said in a statement.
“We recognize the profound loss suffered by one young man’s family and the uncertainty facing another, and we extend our respect to everyone whose lives have been forever changed by these events.”
Anthony, 19, was convicted of first-degree murder in Texas and sentenced to 35 years in prison earlier this month for fatally stabbing Metcalf, 17, at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025.
He filed a notice of appeal less than 24 hours after the verdict.
Anthony, who is locked up in a Texas state prison, claimed in the filing that he is a “penniless, destitute, and indigent person, too poor to employ counsel to represent me on the appeal” — despite his family collecting $625,000 in crowdfunding for his legal defense and “living expenses.”

As I understand it, in order to appeal, you have to be able to show that something was incorrectly done during the trial. You can’t appeal solely because you didn’t like the verdict.
The only error was not ordering his immediate, public execution.
So who pocketed the money raised for the appeal?
If you fail, you lose the appeal.
Karmelo killed, in the heat of the moment, but also came LOOKING for an excuse to attack someone, anyone, on just about any pretext.
Not only did he kill, he readily admitted to it. Poor impulse control is never an excuse for excessive response to any real or imagined threat.
Civilized behavior is a meaningless concept in WAY too many of the youth coming up in the current cohort.
On what grounds? The guy stabbed the other guy in the chest. What was he expecting to happen?
He’ll walk. White lives do not matter when it comes to stuff like this. It’s all about race now, and we lose.
He was expecting to get away with it by claiming "self-defense". It was and is a bogus claim that the jury rightly rejected.
I’m honestly surprised an unelected black robed tyrant hasn’t ordered an injunction on his incarceration.
That’s exactly what I heard. These clowns supporting this racist killer are like a moron who would take a knife to a track meet.
Karmelo went to that tent intending to kill some white kid. It just happened to be Austin Metcalf. But for Karmelo’s supporters, it’s OK to kill white people.
Surely those are grounds for a retrial.
I think you are correct, and you have to exhaust state appeals to get to fed court. Tx Court of Criminal Appeals and SCOTX, being elected, and likely desiring re-election, are very unlikely to touch this case.
I think the interesting thing about the trial is the lack of witnesses claiming what a great guy Karmelo is/was. His backers claim he had a 3.7 G.P.A. yet no teacher testified on his behalf. He was holding two jobs, yet no employer told us what an employee he was. Captain of his track team, but no coach stepped forward.
I think it very likely that all kinds of info about Karmelo would have come out on cross examination and therefore the defense couldn’t take the risk of putting would-be supporters on the stand.
The photos of his showing gang signs wouldn’t help either.
This is a Texas state matter. I don’t anticipate a successful appeal until it runs its course through the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The state bench is predominantly moderate to conservative. However, after finishing the appeal through the state system, the lawyers will use the Federal system. There are Clinton, Obama, and Biden judges on the Texas Federal courts who might call what happened to Anthony as being a civil rights violation.
They most likely need some DEI picks on that jury
Agreed.
If they do somehow succeed and get him freed, I don’t think his life expectancy will be more than a year or two before ‘something most unfortunate’ happens to him and those around him. This case has become far too well known to have the Centerpiece, aka The Murdering Peabrain, just disappear into the background.
As far as I can tell, the GiveSendGo website disallowed a second fundraiser for the appeal. I think it is doubtful the lawyers are actually working pro bono for the appeal.
