The Jumbo Floating Restaurant capsized and sank in the South China Sea just five days after the 76-meter vessel was towed from Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter last Tuesday. Jumbo's owner, Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises Limited, announced the "death" of the vessel, saying it was hit by a thunderstorm as it was sailing near the Paracel Islands on Saturday afternoon. "Water got into the boat and it started to list. The tow company tried to save it but in vain," it said. The vessel eventually fully listed and capsized on Sunday. No crew members were injured. "The vessel sank more than 1,000 meters...

MONTEREY, Calif. - Jumbo squid that can grow up to 7 feet long and weigh more than 110 pounds is invading central California waters and preying on local anchovy, hake and other commercial fish populations, according to a study published Tuesday. An aggressive predator, the Humboldt squid — or Dosidicus gigas — can change its eating habits to consume the food supply favored by tuna and sharks, its closest competitors, according to an article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. "Having a new, voracious predator set up shop here in California may be yet another...

JANE ANN MORRISON: Judge just doesn't see failure to treat people with dignity, respect JANE ANN MORRISON MORE COLUMNS The District Judge Elizabeth Halverson saga is starting to creep beyond the borders of Nevada and into the California news media, while locally the docudrama is the first thing many of us read each day. When they make a TV special of it, I'd like to suggest a name: Power and Paranoia. Halverson spent nine years as a fairly lowly law clerk. (I always assumed the 425-pound woman, according to her driver's license, stayed as long as she could for the...

Jumbo Boeing 747 Reworked to Fight Fires ASSOCIATED PRESS McMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) - The first jumbo jet converted for use as a tanker in fighting forest fires could be ready for service by July, an aviation company said. The Boeing 747 could carry 20,000 gallons of water or fire retardant, 10 times as much as a conventional propeller tanker, Evergreen International Aviation said Thursday. The jet was converted over the past year and has made about 50 test flights in Arizona, the McMinnville, Ore.-based company said. The jet still needs approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. "It represents one of...

Workers use heavy cable and floating barges to begin the righting of the Stellamare on Monday. It was almost imperceptible at first. Slowly and almost silently, the Stellamare started to move on Monday. It was 4 p.m. when two massive waterborne cranes began righting the Dutch-owned cargo ship that had lain on its side at the Port of Albany since capsizing Dec. 9 while a General Electric Co. generator was being loaded. By 4:07 p.m., the moving was done for the day and the 289-foot vessel was more than halfway upright, even farther than had been planned for the first...

Harry Manners and Wally Johnson began elephant hunting in partnership in Mozambique in 1937, and both used off-the-shelf Winchesters (Harry owned four during his lifetime, one of which having a ‘bull-barrel’, which he discarded on the grounds of it being too heavy), both used only Kynoch 300-grain solids, and both averred that this rifle/cartridge combination was all that any professional ivory hunter ever needed. They were both expert shots and could place their bullets accurately from any angle for brain-shots on elephant, but both used shoulder shots when these were convenient, alleging that this was the largest and safest target....
